The Pediatric Surgery department provides care from newborns to adolescents. It brings together the skills and expertise necessary for the management of orthopedic, trauma, urological, visceral, and thoracic surgery for children and adolescents.

    Activities

    The pediatric surgery unit encompasses several specialties. It includes a 22-bed inpatient unit and a 7-bed outpatient unit . The department has acquired four wheelchairs to transport children to the operating room.

    The proximity of the technical platform to the neonatal and pediatric intensive care services, pediatric anesthesia, high-performance medical imaging equipment, as well as to the pediatric emergency department, makes it a sector adapted to the care pathway of the young patient.

    • ophthalmology
    • maxillofacial surgery

    The head of the conventional inpatient unit is Ms. Florence Godin. The team consists of 9 pediatric nurses and 7 nursing assistants/caregivers. A pediatrician is present in this unit to provide optimal pain management for children, assisted by a specialized pediatric nurse. During hospitalizations, schooling is provided by a teacher in a classroom within the surgical ward. The unit has a playroom open to the public, staffed by early childhood educators. Occasionally, an educator accompanies children to the operating room.

    Parents are allowed to visit at any time, but visits are limited to two people per child. Due to the layout of the rooms, only one parent is permitted to stay with their child overnight.

    The department is also at the forefront of minimally invasive surgery (laparoscopy, thoracoscopy) as well as pediatric robotic surgery and urological endoscopic surgery.

    Pathologies

    In Pediatric Visceral and Urological Surgery

    The pathologies treated in the department are extremely varied:

    • surgical emergencies ( acute appendicitis, testicular torsion, acute intussusception, pyloric stenosis, bowel obstruction…) ,
    • urinary tract pathologies ( malformations of the urinary tract, vesicoureteral reflux, pyeloureteral junction obstruction, megaureter, neurogenic or malformed bladder…) ,
    • genital pathologies ( hypospadias, testicular ectopia, variations in sexual development, uterine and vaginal anomalies…) ,
    • pediatric visceral pathologies ( Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, gastroesophageal reflux, Hirschsprung's disease, inguinal hernia…) ,
    • neonatal surgery ( sacrococcygeal teratoma, patent ductus arteriosus, gastroschisis, diaphragmatic hernia, enterocolitis…) ,
    • congenital malformation pathologies ( esophageal atresia, anorectal malformation, pulmonary malformation…) ,
    • Thoracic pathologies ( pulmonary malformations diagnosed perinatally, thoracic deformities in children and adolescents),
    • pediatric tumor pathologies ( neuroblastoma, nephroblastoma…) ,
    • pediatric gynecological pathologies ,
    • Obesity-related pathologies .

    In Pediatric Orthopedic Surgery

    The pediatric orthopedic surgery department is called upon to treat numerous pathologies:

    • traumatic pathologies ( bone fractures) ,
    • osteoarticular infections ,
    • malformative bone pathologies ( syndactyly, clubfoot, etc.) ,
    • spinal pathologies ( scoliosis, hemivertebrae, etc.) ,
    • bone tumor pathologies ( osteosarcomas, exostotic diseases, etc.) ,
    • pathologies affecting people with multiple disabilities.

    These various conditions are encountered during emergency room visits or through specialist consultations. The pediatric orthopedic surgeon may also meet with families regarding prenatal diagnoses of bone malformations (limb abnormalities, for example).
