Epilepsy is a common and debilitating condition for patients and their families. The care of these patients is no longer limited to simply controlling seizures, but considers their overall quality of life (QoL). Improving QoL is one of the main objectives of therapeutic patient education. This study aims to evaluate the impact of educational interventions on the overall QoL of patients with epilepsy.
Between October 2016 and August 2018, 80 patients over the age of 18 with epilepsy for at least 6 months and treated at the Caen Normandy University Hospital in France were included in the study. They were randomly assigned to either the control group receiving usual care or the experimental group participating in group education sessions.
The results show that the overall quality of life (QoL) of patients who participated in educational activities delivered by nurses specializing in epilepsy improved significantly. Further research is needed to assess the sustainability of these effects and the interactions with caregivers.
