Our services
General dataNearly one in 450 children develops cancer each year in France, representing 2,500 patients under the age of 18 annually. More than 80% of them recover thanks to specific treatments. These treatments take place in specialized departments such as the Pediatric Oncology-Hematology Department at the Caen University Hospital. We welcome children from the western Normandy region (Calvados, Manche, and Orne) as well as children from other regions (Pays de la Loire, Normandy, Brittany, and beyond) to receive proton therapy (a specific radiotherapy technique available in only three centers in France).
The Pediatric Oncology-Hematology-Immunology Department at Caen University Hospital provides care for children and adolescents, from 0 to 18 years old, for:
- Cancers and leukemias, which are cancers of the blood,
- Some benign tumors,
- Bone marrow aplasia,
- So-called "benign", non-cancerous blood diseases, such as abnormalities of the red blood cell (sickle cell disease, hereditary spherocytosis, autoimmune hemolytic anemia…), of the platelets (immune thrombocytopenic purpura, …),
- Acquired immune deficiencies (after certain medications, an infection, removal of the spleen…) or primary (genetic).
The service comprises 11 beds, including 5 in a so-called "protected" unit and a 4-bed day hospital unit. Patients are referred primarily by their general practitioner after direct telephone approval, but also by local hospitals and pediatric emergency departments.
Care missionsThe care of children and adolescents is broken down into several levels, from diagnosis to end-of-treatment follow-up:
- Local care on a daily basis : the service works in close collaboration with the region's hospitals and private practitioners, enabling certain treatments to be carried out at home or as close as possible to the home.
- Treatment decisions are discussed at interregional multidisciplinary meetings within the Grand-Ouest Childhood Cancer (GOCE). Active collaboration between pediatric oncologists, surgeons, radiation oncologists, radiologists, and biologists allows for the collegial validation of cancer treatments. The team also participates in national expert meetings.
- Access to excellent treatments : the service has been certified since its creation by the French Society for the Fight against Childhood and Adolescent Cancer and Leukemia, allowing access to research protocols (clinical trials), new drugs (targeted therapies, immunotherapies…).
- Thoracic and visceral surgery is performed by the Pediatric Surgery at the University Hospital of Caen (Professor Rod, Head of Department), who are also trained in the specificities of pediatric oncology and involved in the SFCE.
- Radiotherapy is carried out at the Centre François Baclesse site by a team specializing in pediatric radiotherapy, providing access to multiple innovative techniques (tomotherapy, Cyberknife, Proton therapy, …).
- Many support services are offered: psychologist, therapeutic education, clinical pharmacy consultation, continuation of schooling, adapted physical activity, early childhood educator, program DRAKAJA (support for "AJA": adolescents and young adults aged 15-25), socio-esthetician, storyteller, musician, clowns.
- Long-term follow-up is offered after the end of cancer treatments to prevent and detect potential complications from the treatments received and to improve quality of life.
- Monitoring and immunotherapy in autoimmune blood diseases, via the CEREVANCE rare disease competence centre.
- The management of patients with red blood cell disorders such as sickle cell disease, spherocytosis, etc., via the MCGRE rare disease competence centre .
- The management of patients with primary immunodeficiency, via the CEREDIH rare disease competence center.
Aid for children and familiesA parents' association called CADET ROUSSEL (Tel: 02 33 97 43 85) regularly intervenes to help children and their families. It funds numerous initiatives, including the "coffee and croissant" which allows parents to meet once a week with volunteers trained in active listening.
The association also allows the intervention of a storyteller, a musician, a physical activity educator and a socio-esthetician.
A family house located a 5-minute walk from the University Hospital, managed by this association, is available to families, thus facilitating the stay of those living far from Caen.
Various associations, such as Cadet Rousseland Les Fées Papillons, offer additional activities: tickets to shows at the Zénith or the Stade Malherbe de Caen (football), boat trips, and gatherings of children treated over the past ten years and their families for the Christmas celebration, shows in the ward, etc.
The difficulty of the often repeated hospitalizations is eased by the intervention of an early childhood educator who engages the children in play and various activities. A teacher also works within the ward for hospitalized children. She takes over from the children's regular schooling or from the home schooling program implemented when school attendance is impossible.
Within the framework of care pathways, when the family has to move for care (for example, an allogeneic bone marrow transplant in Rennes or Rouen) , a support system for families also exists at the national level, in collaboration with the social workers of the SFCE centers via U-Link .

Research
The medical and paramedical team is integrated into the GOCE, an inter-regional network ensuring quality patient care, but also aiming to promote clinical research and training development as recommended by theNational Cancer Institute.
The medical team actively participates in the research and use of innovative therapies by taking part in phase 2 and 3 clinical trials of French, European, and international research protocols. Approximately thirty trials are currently underway in the unit. In addition to this active participation in trials, the team has initiated and conducted several clinical studies, thus contributing to the advancement of scientific knowledge. The department is also involved in preclinical research through Dr. Rouger's membership in the ISTCT unit, "Imaging and Therapeutic Strategies for Brain Cancers and Tissues"(UMR6030), within the OncoCARE group, whose research is dedicated to the fight against cancer.
Paramedical research is also being developed to improve the quality of patient care.
