Since 2016, the Caen Normandy University Hospital has been involved inAdapted Physical Activity for therapeutic purposes and for several decades in promoting regular physical activity for health.
One observation: an epidemic of sedentary lifestyles and inactivity!
Today, only 5% of adults have enough physical activity to be protective of their health (ANSES 15/02/2022). This figure takes into account the recommendations for endurance exercise (30 minutes 5 times a week), muscle strengthening activity (1 to 2 times a week) and flexibility exercises (2 to 3 times a week).
Our main goal: to combat sedentary lifestyles and physical inactivity, and to show that a healthy life (both mental and physical) depends on movement! And movement is always possible when it's adapted to your needs!
Team
All physical activities offered by the MSS of the Caen Normandy University Hospital are supervised by teachers in Adapted Physical Activity and Health.
We can therefore count on:
- 7 EAPA,
- 6 students in Master's program in STAPS Physical Activity) (patient sessions, group classes, personalized sessions)
- 12 volunteer speakers from outside the MSS (wellness sessions)

Protocols and approaches to adapted physical activity for therapeutic purposes
At the MSS (Medical and Social Support Unit), patient sessions can only take place within the framework of pre-established protocols. These protocols are developed collaboratively between specialists in the relevant pathology or condition and the MSS Caen Normandy University Hospital. All protocols must be validated by an agreement obtained from the Health Research Guidance Office.
The implementation and results of this work are validated in the Adapted Physical Activity and Health Research Group (GRAPAS).
Procedure of a protocol
- Adapted Physical Activity Assessment
- APA support
- Interim and end-of-care assessment of APA (Personalized Autonomy Allowance)
- Supporting the patient towards maintaining their physical activity routine
Medical transport prescriptions cannot be issued under the APA for therapeutic purposes.
Physical activity reports
Initial assessment
During the patient's first visit, an initial assessment will be carried out according to the recommendations of the French National Authority for Health ( ) by an EAPAS ) from the University Hospital (CHU Caen Normandie). This assessment includes evaluations of endurance, strength, flexibility, balance, and other health indicators.
Following this initial phase, there are 3 possibilities:
- To begin a care or research protocol within the MSS CHU Caen Normandie.
- Organize APA support with the APA structures in the area.
- Conduct the sessions via video conference
Interim report
During an Adapted Physical Activity (APA), an interim assessment will be conducted. This assessment allows for monitoring the patient's progress, adjusting the program if necessary, and addressing motivation if needed. This assessment reiterates the elements of the initial assessment.
Final assessment
At the end of the protocol, a final assessment will be carried out with an interview in order to agree on the best solutions to sustain the practice of AP.
