Activities
This activity consists of diagnosing and treating lesions of the neck and throat (thyroid, larynx and pharynx) and salivary glands (parotid and submandibular glands).
Head and neck cancer treatment benefits from a multidisciplinary approach (oncologists and ENT specialists) for malignant tumors of the nasal and paranasal cavities, the oral cavity, the pharynx and larynx, and facial skin tumors. Treatments include surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy.
Otology encompasses the diagnostic examination and treatment of ear disorders (infections, hearing loss, and vertigo) and facial nerve disorders. Treatments are both medical and surgical.
Surgical treatments include surgery for perforated eardrums, cholesteatoma and chronic infectious mastoiditis, deafness surgery and oto-neurosurgery (cochlear implant, removal of acoustic neuromas, vestibular neurectomy for the treatment of vertigo, paragangliomas…) and rehabilitation of facial paralysis.
It concerns:
- Diagnosis and treatment of infectious diseases (otitis, rhinopharyngitis, etc.)
- Pediatric ENT surgery mainly deals with tonsillectomies, otoplasties, foreign body removals, surgery for embryonic craniofacial malformations and laryngeal and bronchial malformations in children.
- Screening for childhood deafness with its management in collaboration with the Early Medical-Social Action Centre (CAMPS): placement of cochlear implant, management of cervico-facial malformations.
It provides diagnosis and treatment of chronic nasosinus pathologies, particularly allergic ones.
Nose and sinus surgery can be functional (meatotomy, ethmoidectomy, sphenoidotomy, frontal sinus surgery, septoplasty, rhinoseptoplasty) , cosmetic (rhinoplasty) , or oncological (surgery for hemorrhoidal cancers, anterior skull base cancers) . It is performed endoscopically or via external surgery and can be guided by CT scan neuronavigation for optimal precision.
They explore hearing (pure-tone, speech, behavioral audiometry, auditory evoked potentials, otoacoustic emissions) but also the vestibular organs (videonystagmography, myogenic evoked potentials, VHIT) and the exploration of swallowing (fibroscopy, radiocinema of swallowing).
ENT emergencies are handled by the ENT · cervicofacial surgery team , within the emergency department of the University Hospital .
The Centre for Diagnosis and Guidance of Deafness (CDOS) is a unit belonging to theENT and cervico-facial surgery department of the University Hospital of Caen.
His role is to support, inform, and guide parents of deaf children or adults who have become deaf. He also performs cochlear implant adjustments.

The research
Research activity
The ENT department is working on developing new treatment protocols and surgical techniques. It is also participating in several studies aimed at improving diagnosis, management, and quality of life in ENT cancer, in common ENT pathologies (peritonsillar abscess, etc.) or rarer ones (Rendue Osler-Weber disease, etc.).
He also participates in clinical and basic research in connection with the INSERM U1086 ANTICIPE "CANCERS AND PREVENTIONS" and U 1075 "COMETE" , which work on the inner ear and its impact on the brain.
