Resource and Competence Centers for Cystic Fibrosis
Cystic fibrosis affects the respiratory tract and the digestive system. It is the most common genetic disease. Nearly 200 children with cystic fibrosis are born each year in France (ie one child for 4,500 births) : the number of patients affected by this disease is estimated at more than 7,000 people, > 50% of whom are adults.
To support patients with cystic fibrosis, the Resource and Competence Centers for Cystic Fibrosis were created in April 2002. Made up of a multidisciplinary team of doctors, nurses, dieticians, psychologists, social workers and physiotherapists specializing in cystic fibrosis, the CRCM coordinate the care and follow-up of patients (adults or children) and their families.
There are 49 CRCMs in the territory, 20 mixed (adults and children) , 17 pediatrics and 12 adults. In Caen, the CRCM is mixed. 130 families, 85 children and 45 adults are followed there by health professionals from the CHU.

Screenings
Since 2001 , in France, screening for cystic fibrosis has been carried out at birth in all newborns, by taking blood from the heel. It allows, through early diagnosis, faster and more appropriate management of children with cystic fibrosis.
Consultations & hospitalizationsMultidisciplinary consultations and day hospitalizations are organized by the team for patient care.
If necessary, hospitalizations can be carried out in the pediatric department and if specialist advice is requested (endocrinology, ENT , surgery, etc.) , the consultations will be coordinated by the referring doctor.
