A teaching missionIt translates to:
- The training of future maxillofacial and oral surgeons
- A maxillofacial surgeon is a specialist physician who has completed 12 years of training: six years of medical school, followed by a four-year surgical residency and a two-year post-residency.
During their residency, they completed rotations in various specialties such as plastic surgery, neurosurgery, orthopedic surgery, and visceral surgery in order to obtain the Diploma of Specialized Studies in Maxillofacial Surgery, thus becoming a specialist in maxillofacial surgery.
Maxillofacial surgeons work in the fields of oncology, traumatology, reconstruction, aesthetics, and implant surgery.
They are also qualified to perform all types of procedures, such as harvesting tissue from anywhere in the body for free flap grafting on the face. They are skilled in managing the postoperative course and any potential complications of their procedures. He was also "experienced" in emergency surgery during his shifts in the hospitals he worked at. - An oral surgeon is a medical specialist or a dentist specializing in oral surgery. After passing their respective competitive examinations, a four-year residency is required. During the first two years of residency, a rigorous preparatory program is undertaken (in medicine for residents from the dental track and in dentistry for those from the medical track).
During their residency, they must complete seven oral surgery rotations, two of which must be under the supervision of a physician and two under the supervision of a dentist, in order to obtain the Diploma of Specialized Studies in Oral Surgery. The oral surgeon is qualified to provide medical and surgical care for diseases of the jaws and surrounding tissues. His area of expertise revolves around simple and complex oral implantology (oral reconstruction with zygomatic implants…), pre-implant surgery (bone grafts…) and orthodontics (canine exposure, corticotomies…), benign tumors of the jaws, medical management of non-tumorous salivary pathologies (lithiasis…), temporomandibular joint disorders, alveolo-dental traumatology, oral dermatology, orofacial pain, etc.
Continuing medical education and ongoing professional development of the department's surgeons
It is carried out within the various departmental meetings and through active participation in national and international congresses of the various scientific societies of which the surgeons are members (for example: the French Society of Stomatology, Maxillofacial Surgery and Oral Surgery, the French Association of Facial Surgeons, the French Society of Cervico-Facial Carcinology, the French Society of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery, the European Association for Cranio-MaxilloFacial Surgery, the Francophone Association of Facial Clefts).
Outpatient consultationsConsultations are given exclusively by appointment with a letter from a doctor (general practitioner or specialist) or dentist.
They cover all aspects of the discipline and are provided by qualified practitioners, each specializing in a particular area. Therefore, when you make an appointment, the receptionist will ask you about the reason for your consultation in order to direct you to the most appropriate practitioner (unless your referral letter is for a specific practitioner).
Many procedures under local anesthesia (without hospitalization) are performed on an outpatient basis.
HospitalizationsOutpatient hospitalization (1 day)
Some procedures can be performed under general anesthesia on an outpatient basis: these procedures are carried out by the surgeons of the University Hospital in specially equipped premises, reserved for this activity and made available to the University Hospital by the Miséricorde clinic.
Weekly hospitalization (lasting less than 5 days)
These hospitalizations take place from Monday morning starting at 7am until Friday at 6pm, excluding public holidays.

The research
Clinical research
Clinical research is being conducted in the Maxillofacial Surgery department in collaboration with other departments, in areas relating to the improvement of diagnosis and treatment in oncology by the sentinel lymph node technique, to the improvement of reconstructive surgery procedures in certain malformations and in certain major damage of post-traumatic origin.
Significant grants from the Fondation des Gueules Cassées have been awarded to the department on several occasions to support original and innovative work in clinical research on severe facial trauma sequelae through the development of tailor-made osteogenic bone distraction equipment.
The department is a pioneer in pre-surgical three-dimensional planning and computer-assisted surgery in the fields of bone reconstruction and orthognathic surgery. This planning is carried out in close collaboration with clinical engineers who work within the laboratory that designs the equipment (custom-made titanium plates and implants, cutting guides, placement guides, etc.). Publications in international journals and presentations at international conferences have been published on this topic.
The maxillofacial surgery department is now affiliated with the Karim Boumedienne Connective Tissue Biochemistry Laboratory (EA 3214) and is working on the role of growth factors in bone and cartilage reconstruction. Several members of our surgical team completed their Master's research on one of these topics.
A research mission at the heart of innovation
Several research themes are being developed in the Maxillofacial Surgery department in collaboration with other departments, in areas related to improving diagnosis and treatment in facial reconstruction.
Significant grants from the “Fondation des Gueules Cassées” or the “Filière TÊTE COU” have been awarded to the service on several occasions to support its original and innovative research work:
Customized bone surgery: the department is a pioneer in pre-surgical three-dimensional planning and computer-assisted surgery in the fields of bone reconstruction and orthognathic surgery. This planning is carried out in close collaboration with clinical engineers who work with the laboratory that designs the equipment (custom-made titanium plates and implants, cutting guides, placement guides, etc.). Several residents, supervised by senior staff members, have completed their Master of Research in biomechanics of the native, distracted, and decellularized mandible. Publications in international journals and presentations at international conferences have been published on this topic.
- Decellularized tissue: The maxillofacial surgery department also collaborates with the connective tissue biochemistry laboratory (BIOCONNECT) of Karim BOUMEDIENNE (EA 7451) on ear cartilage engineering using decellularized matrix, and on the application of growth factors in bone and cartilage reconstruction. One of the surgeons even defended his doctoral thesis on this topic.
- Auricular molding: the department has also secured funding for the treatment of ear deformities in newborns through the application of custom-made silicone molds. These molds allow for the repositioning of cartilage without the need for surgery. This treatment is performed in the first few days of life (before day 10).
- All this research activity has been enhanced by presentations at conferences as well as scientific articles in international journals.
