At the Caen Normandy University Hospital, children with cleft lip and palate are followed by a multidisciplinary team that meets once a month. In a single consultation appointment, children and their parents benefit from the expertise of about ten specialists : maxillofacial and ENT, an orthodontist, a child psychiatrist, a geneticist, a speech therapist, and a prosthetist. During this meeting, the family and experts exchange information, deliberate, and make a shared decision.
The various stages of the intervention are then scheduled and coordinated. This organization saves time for parents who previously had to meet with each practitioner individually, without the possibility of direct consultation with all the professionals involved. The multidisciplinary nature of these consultations is therefore a significant advantage for the children and their families, as well as for the practitioners who can compare and refine their treatment strategies by consulting with their peers.
Approximately twelve families are seen during these monthly consultations.
