Activities
The Microbiology sector encompasses diagnostic activities in Bacteriology, Mycology, and Parasitology at the Côte de Nacre site. It is organized into 7 sub-sectors:
- Syndromic PCR
- Bacterial culture
- Identification and antibiogram
- Mycobacteria (P3 laboratory)
- Bacterial, fungal and parasitic serology
- Molecular Biology
- Genomic epidemiology
Bacteriological diagnosis and therapeutic advice
- Performing bacteriological analyses: direct examinations, cultures, identification by MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry, antigenic, serological and molecular methods (PCR , bacterial "pan")
- Classic and rapid diagnosis (by molecular biology) of tuberculosis; diagnosis of atypical mycobacterial infections, mycobacterial antibiograms
- Determination of antibiotic susceptibility (antibiogram), including the reference method by microdilution in liquid medium (Determination of Minimum Inhibitory Concentrations) (VIZION System)
- role of alert and therapeutic advice in case of diagnosis of severe infections (bacteremia, endocarditis…).
Prevention of infectious risk:
- Identification of multi-resistant (MRS) and emerging highly resistant (HR) bacteria.
- Infection Prevention and Control Service
- 24/7 diagnosis of bacterial infections (continuous care),
- Performing antibiotic susceptibility tests: disk diffusion antibiogram and liquid medium, minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC)
- First-line therapeutic advice (antibiotics, including antifungals and antiparasitics)
- Participation in the Anti-Infective Drugs Commission (CAI) for the appropriate prescription of antibiotics, antifungals and antiparasitics
- Involvement in the prevention and control of healthcare-associated infections through the detection, identification and molecular typing of multidrug-resistant (MDR) and highly resistant (HR) bacteria in collaboration with the Infection Prevention and Control service
Prevention and control of nosocomial infections: identification and typing of multi-resistant bacteria in collaboration with the Infection Prevention and Control.
- Member of FeNOMIH (Normandy University Hospital Federation of Microbiology, Infectious Diseases and Hospital Hygiene)
- Laboratory associated with the Reference Centre for Complex Osteoarticular Infections.
- Regional Genomic Epidemiology Unit (CREM) : centralization in the laboratory of highly resistant strains, or any strain responsible for an epidemic in the Normandy region, for molecular analysis and understanding of the mechanisms of strain circulation
- Reference laboratory for prenatal diagnosis of toxoplasmosis (ministerial approval).

Teaching and research
Research
Due to its expertise and research on pathogens and infectious diseases, the Microbial Adaptation Research Group ( GRAM 2.0) has been awarded INSERM accreditation, leading to the creation of the Joint Research Unit UMR 1311 DYNAMICURE for Microbial Dynamics Associated with Urinary and Respiratory Infections. Established on January 1 , 2022, the UMR is being restructured by integrating fundamental bacteriologists from the University of Caen Normandy (UCN) and staff from Labéo (an animal health research center), while focusing its scientific work on urinary and respiratory infections.
It brings together teacher-researchers from the laboratories of:

The main research areas of the Microbiology laboratory are:
- the study of virulence and antibiotic resistance mechanisms of multidrug-resistant bacteria responsible for epidemics and nosocomial infections,
- The molecular pathophysiology and management of complicated skin infections (including Verneuil's disease or hidradenitis suppurativa), using the opportunistic pathogen Staphylococcus lugdunensis
To answer these questions, the department is currently developing a next-generation sequencing (NGS) approach in close collaboration with the Virology andHospital Hygiene.
teaching
The practitioners of the service participate in the theoretical training of students from the Faculty of Medicine (UE Infectious Agents) and the Faculty of Pharmacy, interns of the DES in Medical Biology, students in Midwifery, operating room nurses, students in BTS, in Sciences (Bachelor's, Master's, Doctorates, university diplomas…).
Practical training in the laboratory
Due to its hospital-university activities, the department is accredited for the practical training of interns enrolled in the DES (Diploma of Specialized Studies) in Medical Biology
He is also involved in the training of technical staff, interns outside the field, trainees in BTS, licentiates, masters, and various health professionals as part of continuing education.
