Pink October
Together, let's fight women's cancers!
Breast Cancer Awareness Month , the Caen Normandy University Hospital is mobilizing to raise awareness about the fight against women's cancers. For a whole month, the gynecology and obstetrics teams will be working to educate people about this disease and the solutions to combat it, support patients and their loved ones, and offer them appropriate support services.
During this special month, the University Hospital is highlighting its main work in the field of breast cancer, for the women of the region and for advancing the fight against this disease.
Breast cancer screening: a major challenge for the University Hospital
The university hospital has long offered breast screenings to its patients and aims to expand this service in the coming year to offer even faster waiting times to the population. Cancer detected early is cancer that is more easily treated!
Breast consultations: a major new service offered by the University Hospital for women in the region
Long absent from the care pathways of patients with cancer, the University Hospital is committed this year to setting up, from November 2023, consultations dedicated to breast pathologies for all people requesting them or referred to its service.
These consultations will be conducted by professional gynecologist-obstetricians trained in this disease, within a strengthened team of 5 doctors and an experienced paramedical team. Full access to diagnostic and therapeutic pathways will be offered to patients who require it.
Fertility preservation is central to the challenges of patient care
The increased effectiveness of cancer treatments is unfortunately accompanied by an increase in their toxicity. Consequently, long-term side effects are not uncommon in cured patients, and the impact on fertility, in these circumstances, represents a significant challenge to maintaining a good quality of life despite recovery.
The Caen Normandy University Hospital is thus recognized as a reference center for the entire hemi-region with its reproductive medicine and biology department. This department already welcomes many women with breast cancer so that they can be offered a fertility preservation solution.
An innovative technique for healing after-effects: vaginal laser
This fight against the after-effects of treatments has led the Caen Normandy University Hospital and its gynecology to offer innovative solutions for patients. For example, the gynecology team recently introduced a new technique used to treat vaginal dryness related to breast cancer treatments.
More specifically, the University Hospital has developed expertise in vulvovaginal pathologies over several years by conducting joint dermatologist-gynecologist consultations specifically for these conditions. The University Hospital has acquired a laser specially designed for this purpose (Monalisatouch® Laser) and now offers this treatment at no extra cost to patients during a medical consultation.
Thanks to the "vaginal laser", supported by La Rochambelle , the Normandy Region and the Caen Normandy Health Foundation of the Caen Normandy University Hospital, our medical teams can now offer suitable solutions to help patients return to as normal a life as possible.
A university hospital at the heart of training healthcare professionals in breast cancer
The care team at the University Hospital is not only on the front line in the fight against breast cancer, it also trains future generations of doctors, nurses and midwives in the care of patients and this disease, through its medical professor and member of the team (Professor Raffaèle Fauvet).
A certified hairdresser to help people cope better with illness at the heart of the university hospital
On the ground floor of the " Women-Children-Hematology " ( FEH ) building, the University Hospital welcomes Johana, a hair prosthesis specialist offering wigs, caps, turbans, and hair accessories. Her role, like that of other prosthetists in the region, is essential in supporting patients during the active phases of treatment.
The proximity of the "Adelaide" salon makes it a valuable asset for healthcare teams and patients seeking solutions to maintain their self-esteem regardless of their situation.
#CHUCaenRose: For solidarity and research
During this Pink October period, the Caen Normandy University Hospital, in unison with all health and civil society stakeholders, is launching an appeal for solidarity for patients and against breast cancer.
The contribution and support of everyone to the care teams, the University Hospital and its foundation are crucial to continue offering new services to patients, developing new techniques, and proposing new treatments.
Let's not forget gynecological cancers
This Pink October should also allow us to highlight the actions taken by the University Hospital against gynecological and ovarian cancers in particular. Indeed, the issue of breast cancer inevitably leads to the issue of women's cancers in general.
The Caen Normandy University Hospital, a referral center for gynecological cancers, takes care of many patients with various female cancers each year, ensuring their care and support from their screening until their return home.
