Pediatric Reception Unit for Children in Danger
The Caen Normandy University Hospital is committed to fighting violence against children
At Caen Normandy University Hospital, since the first half of 2023, children and adolescents in danger or suspected of being so are welcomed by a multidisciplinary team within the Pediatric Reception Unit for Children in Danger ( UAPED ). In collaboration with local organizations and professionals committed to this issue, this unit provides comprehensive, integrated, protected, and graduated care for minors for whom a situation of danger is suspected or confirmed.
Close collaboration with local stakeholders
The UAPED (Unit for the Prevention of Violence Against Children) is part of the interministerial plan to combat violence against children (2020-2022) and relies on close collaboration between local stakeholders and professionals already involved at the Caen Normandy University Hospital. Working closely with the Calvados Departmental Council and the Justice system , the UAPED is available to all healthcare professionals, both within and outside the hospital, who, in the course of their work, suspect a situation of danger involving a child or adolescent.
The Caen Normandy University Hospital has also been designated by the Normandy Regional Health Agency "Regional Pediatric Referral Team for Children at Risk" ( EPRRED ).
This new regional initiative aims to provide referral and expert services for minors, specialized resources for all healthcare professionals in the region, awareness and training programs, prevention, identification, and intervention approaches to be integrated into professional practices, and research and teaching missions. This team's mission is to work in a spirit of territorial coherence.
Organizing a half-day training session
In early November, the institution and the University of Caen Normandy also offered a half-day training session led by UAPED and EPRRED, along with relevant hospital departments, primarily pediatrics , forensic medicine , and child psychiatry . This key event, organized in collaboration with the Calvados departmental council and the public prosecutor's office of the Caen judicial court, is a first step toward improving the identification of dangerous situations and providing care for all healthcare professionals in the region.
Situations involving children and adolescents at risk affect more than 10% of minors. These situations include physical, sexual, and psychological violence, neglect, domestic violence, and also prostitution.
Early identification of at-risk children and interprofessional and interinstitutional collaboration are invaluable tools for addressing these situations, which can sometimes lead to denial among professionals. Thanks to the combined efforts of all stakeholders, these children and adolescents will have better access to healthcare services.
By addressing the clinical, psychological, social, and legal aspects of children at risk, this half-day training session, which brought together more than 250 healthcare professionals, facilitated collaboration with local stakeholders to implement a tailored and tiered healthcare system for at-risk children.
During the week dedicated to children's rights, the Caen Normandy University Hospital hosted the Educadroit FEH reception hall .
