Information for making an appointment

Neurosurgery appointments are made exclusively by email to neurochirurgie@chu-caen.fr

You must send the following in the email:

  • Your doctor's referral letter
  • A copy of your identity document (front and back)
  • All your administrative information ( mobile phone number , postal address, etc.)

Your request will be processed within one week of receiving your email.

The secretariat will send you a summons specifying the date and time of the appointment as well as the name of the practitioner who will take care of you.

If you would like a specific practitioner, please specify this in the subject line of the email.

Our services

Missions

The Neurosurgery Department at Caen Normandy University Hospital provides comprehensive care for all cranial and spinal neurosurgical conditions throughout the former Lower Normandy region and surrounding areas. The department offers 24/7 emergency services year-round. Clinical activities include consultations, diagnostic procedures, and treatments for neurosurgical conditions requiring specific monitoring and/or surgical intervention in both adult and pediatric patients. The catchment area serves a population of 1.8 million.

Activities

Each year, over 9,000 consultations and nearly 2,300 procedures are performed in the Neurosurgery department. Innovative techniques are regularly developed and evaluated within the framework of clinical research protocols. These techniques cover all areas, and more specifically neurosurgical neuro-oncology, spinal surgery, vascular neurosurgery, and functional neurosurgery (except for deep brain stimulation and SEEG).

Care

The care activities cover the entire spectrum of neurosurgical pathology, both in the adult and pediatric populations, more specifically:

  • Traumatic brain injuries (fractures, hematomas, cerebral edema…),
  • Brain tumors (metastases, gliomas, meningiomas, acoustic neuromas, pituitary tumors…),
  • Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) circulation disorders (hydrocephalus, Chiari malformations, syringomyelia…),
  • Vascular pathology (cerebral aneurysm, arteriovenous malformations, cavernomas…),
  • Spinal pathology:
    • Traumatic (vertebral fractures, ligament instability…),
    • Tumor (metastasis…),
    • Degenerative (herniated disc, lumbar spinal stenosis, spondylolisthesis, scoliosis…),
    • Innovative activities: disc replacements, anterior approaches, percutaneous arthrodesis,
  • Spinal cord pathologies (tumors, vascular malformations),
  • Pathologies of the peripheral nerves (carpal tunnel syndrome, acoustic neuromas…),
  • Functional neurosurgery:
    • Surgery for chronic pain (cerebral or spinal cord stimulation, cordotomies, drezotomy, morphine pumps, neurovascular decompression and ballooning for trigeminal neuralgia, radiofrequency techniques),
    • Surgery for refractory epilepsy (primarily lesional),
    • Spasticity surgery (neurotomies, tenotomies, Baclofen pumps),
  • Pediatric neurosurgery (craniosynostosis, brain tumors, hydrocephalus, dysraphisms).
Hospitalizations

The department has 57 inpatient beds spread across three units (2 units on the 12thfloor of the Côte de Nacre Tower and 1 unit on the 11thfloor , with a 5-bed continuous care unit). In addition, there are 2 day hospital chairs.

Pediatric hospitalization takes place at FEH in the pediatric surgery and/or pediatric intensive care units.

The consultation area, located on level 12, is divided into four consultation rooms and one room for rTMS stimulation and pain management nurse consultations. The ERAS ( in spine and neuro-oncology is also located within the consultation area.

Patients with serious neurosurgical conditions requiring intensive care are hospitalized in the surgical intensive care unit (3 units on the 6thfloor and 1 unit on the 16thfloor ).

Surgical activities are carried out in 2 operating blocks: one block dedicated to neurosurgery, on the 12th floor (3 operating rooms), and one block dedicated to emergency interventions in the University Hospital Emergency Medicine department as well as access to the pediatric block of the Woman·Child·Hematology ( FEH ) hospital and some outpatient surgery sessions at FEH as well.

The technical platform

The operating room's technical platform consists of:

  • 4 state-of-the-art operating microscopes,
  • 2 neuronavigation guidance systems,
  • 1 neuro-sono-navigation guidance system,
  • 1 neurosurgical endoscopy column,
  • 3 ultrasonic vacuum cleaners,
  • 1 stereotaxic system,
  • 1 intraoperative electrophysiological monitoring system for awake surgery, and peripheral nerve monitoring for basic skull surgery.
  • Recently, a 3D amp spinal navigation system will be acquired, as well as a third neuronavigation system

    There is ongoing collaboration with several other specialists at the University Hospital and other partner hospitals, enabling multidisciplinary care.     The Neurosurgery department is affiliated with theUniversity of Caen Basse-Normandie and provides teaching activities to medical students and offers a postgraduate training programin Neurosurgery developed from European standards.

    Furthermore, the department is committed to exploring and developing new treatments by participating in numerous clinical and basic research projects. In particular, through a partnership with Cyceron, many research projects aimed at improving patient care are conducted regularly. Our department is among the world leaders in research on ruptured intracranial aneurysms. We are also recognized for our neuro-oncology research. The neurosurgery department's proactive approach to research ensures that you always benefit from the best possible treatment, potentially innovative, and always validated according to the most rigorous scientific standards.

    Publications and research protocols

    The department's research activity can be measured by the number of scientific publications in specialized international journals, which has exceeded 100 over the last 10 years.

    Another indicator of the national recognition of the Neurosurgery department is its ability to secure significant public funding to conduct large-scale studies across the country. Over the past five years, the department has received three major grants totaling nearly €2 million, enabling it to continually offer innovative solutions for our patients.

    Teachers, researchers from the department

    This significant research activity also translates into important national responsibilities for the research professors in the department:

    • Professor Evelyne Emery, head of the neurosurgery department, is also the president of the National University Committee of Neurosurgery, the highest body for neurosurgery teaching researchers in France.
    • Professor Thomas Gaberel is the editor-in-chief of the journal Neurochirurgie, an international scientific journal published by the French Society of Neurosurgery and the French-speaking Society of Neurosurgery.
