      Activity

The addiction service is a level 3 university hospital service, a regional referral service. It fulfills a triple mission of care, teaching and research.

      • The treatment service is for any patient with a substance use disorder (alcohol, cannabis, cocaine, heroin, misused medications, and other illicit substances) or a behavioral addiction.
The service also specializes in the assessment and treatment of cognitive impairments related to alcohol use disorder.
      • The department is also involved in teaching, serving as a clinical placement site for medical and pharmacy studentsand residents. It plays a significant teaching role at the local and regional levels. The department provides all addiction studies instruction for the DFASM (Diploma of Specialized Training in Medical Sciences) and the DES (Diploma of Specialized Studies) in Psychiatry. It is heavily involved in the coordination and delivery of courses for the University Diploma in Addictology.
The department coordinates the regional Specialized Training Program in Addictology.
      • The department conducts and participates in several clinical research protocols. It collaborates closely with theU1237 PhinD unit.

      A tailored multidisciplinary approach

The addiction service offers multidisciplinary care to patients with substance use disorders involving one or more psychoactive substances, or behavioral addiction.

Various types of care are offered, either outpatient via external consultation or residential via full hospitalization or day hospitalization.

Full-time hospitalization allows for complex addiction treatment.

The care programs are based on psychoeducation and cognitive and behavioral therapies.

The service develops an original approach to the treatment of addictions by specifically taking into account the neuropsychological aspects of the disorders.

Most admissions are scheduled, based on consultations (external within the department, via partner structures in the network), or following advanced medical consultations with patients hospitalized within the Caen University Hospital, thus helping to streamline the patient journey.

Hospitalized patients are admitted based on the nature and severity of their disorders.

      Care activities

      The consultations

The specialized addiction consultation is the first meeting between the patient and a member of the team (doctor or nurses trained in addiction). It is a crucial and pivotal moment in the patient's care.

      Goals :

      • Assess the severity of the substance use disorder
      • Evaluate each patient's addiction plan for the different substances consumed
      • To propose options for care, hospitalization or outpatient follow-up
      • To monitor the patient's addiction treatment plan
      • Maintaining the patient in post-hospitalization care

      Full-time hospitalization

Access to hospitalization is via outpatient consultation within the department, via an addiction consultation carried out in an outpatient consultation center of the network or via a transfer from a department of the University Hospital.

A visit to the unit is possible at any time prior to hospitalization in order to present the service.

The inpatient unit primarily admits patients undergoing complex withdrawals and the initiation of Opioid Substitution Therapy for complex cases. Following this period, patients can participate in a one-week group psychoeducational module, followed by a similar module focused on relapse prevention.

These care arrangements take place over several weeks, and each proposed sequence of care is discussed between the patient and the multidisciplinary team.

Hospitalization is subject to certain operating procedures; the service's welcome booklet is available on the website.

The specialized psychotherapeutic care sessions are inspired by cognitive-behavioral therapies and are based on the principles of motivational interviewing. The workshops are led by professionals from all departments within the service.

Various therapeutic approaches are offered: body-mediated therapy (relaxation, aesthetic care in the helping relationship…), virtual reality, group therapy (proposal to participate in a discussion group…).

The service has national and international expertise in the assessment and management of cognitive disorders related to addictions; screening +/- cognitive assessment are systematically offered to patients.

For patients with cognitive impairment and/or altered general condition, a stay in a SMR (partner service) is recommended.

Social support may be offered to hospitalized patients to meet their needs.

      Day hospitalization

The day hospitalization service for addiction patients has two different orientations and follows full-time treatment. This type of hospitalization represents the interface between full hospitalization and returning home, allowing for support of the most vulnerable patients.

The first approach, with sessions held 3 days a week (Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday), focuses on relapse prevention within a personalized care program. It supports the patient in their addiction treatment plan (moderation or abstinence)and follows the psychoeducational care provided during inpatient hospitalization.

The service also offers cognitive remediation workshops, 2 days a week (Tuesday and Friday) for patients with cognitive disorders.

      • The research

        The discipline

Addiction studies is a promising discipline in terms of both clinical and basic research.

The department has been conducting research projects for about fifteen years. It has recently joined forces with the Neuropresage team ofU1237 PhinD unit Professor Vivien's

The research themes focus on neuropsychology, neuroimaging and cognitive remediation of cognitive disorders related to alcohol use disorder.

New projects aim to develop and evaluate innovative non-drug therapeutic tools (psychoeducation, adapted physical activity, virtual reality) and to clarify the profiles and mechanisms of cognitive and cerebral damage related to alcohol and addictions.
