Caen Normandy University Hospital has been involved in Adapted Physical Activity for therapeutic purposes and for several decades for the practice of regular physical activity to promote health.

One observation: epidemic of sedentary lifestyle and inactivity!

Today, only 5% of adults have sufficient physical activity to be protective for their health ( ANSES 02/15/2022 ). This figure takes into account the recommendations concerning the practice of endurance PA (30 minutes 5 times per week), muscle strengthening activity (1 to 2 times per week) and flexibility exercise (2 3 times a week).

Our major challenge: to fight against a sedentary lifestyle and physical inactivity and to discover that living in good health (moral and physical) requires movement! This is always possible when it is adapted!

Protocols and support for physical activity adapted for therapeutic purposes

In the MSS CHU Caen Normandie, sessions for patients can only be carried out within the framework of protocols studied in advance. These protocols are worked on between specialists in the pathology or damage and the MSS CHU Caen Normandie team. Any protocol must be validated by an agreement obtained from the Health Research Orientation Center .

The implementation and results of this work are validated by the Adapted Physical Activity and Health Research Group ( GRAPAS ) .

    Progress of a protocol

    1. Adapted Physical Activity Assessment
    2. APA support
    3. APA assessment and end of care
    4. Supporting the patient towards perpetuating their practice of physical activity

A medical prescription for transport cannot be made within the framework of the APA for therapeutic purposes.

    Physical activity assessments

    Initial assessment

When the patient first comes, an initial assessment will be carried out according to the recommendations of the High Authority of Health by an EAPAS from the MSS CHU Caen Normandie. It is composed of an evaluation of endurance, strength, flexibility, balance, but also health indicators.

Following this first step, 3 possibilities:

    • Start a treatment or research protocol within the MSS CHU Caen Normandie.
    • APA support local APA structures
    • Carry out video conference sessions

    Interim balance sheet

During an APA , an interim assessment will be carried out. This makes it possible to check the patient's progress, to reorient the program if necessary, as well as to work on motivation if necessary. This assessment takes up the elements of the first.

    Final balance sheet

At the end of the protocol, a final assessment will be carried out with an interview in order to agree on the best solutions to perpetuate the practice of AP.
