IDE Announcement ConsultationsThere are slots for nurse announcement consultations on Tuesdays and Thursdays .
Four nurses are trained for this activity. If the patient wishes, a family member or designated contact person can be present on the day the diagnosis is announced. The healthcare professional listens to the patient to understand their level of information and concerns. They summarize what was said during the medical consultation, explain the treatment process, and, most importantly, assess the patient's needs for supportive care.
Clinical pharmacy in hematologyThe clinical pharmacy activity within the Lower Normandy Hematology Institute (IHBN) is structured around different missions:
- Pharmaceutical analysis of prescriptions from the department.
- Medication reconciliation at admission and discharge involves creating a comprehensive list of medications taken by the patient before hospitalization and comparing it with the initial prescription written in the ward. The process is the same at discharge, comparing the patient's usual medications with the discharge prescription. Furthermore, this discharge prescription is shared with community healthcare professionals, thus strengthening the link between community and hospital care.
- The return of medication to the department for targeted patients.
The clinical pharmacist provides patients with information about their medication regimen through pharmaceutical consultations (initiation/follow-up). These consultations are conducted for patients starting oral chemotherapy, as well as patients enrolled in clinical research protocols. These consultations can be conducted in person or remotely (teleconsultation, telephone interview). Following these consultations, information is shared with various healthcare professionals, strengthening the link between community and hospital care.
In addition, the clinical pharmacist has an advisory role with the medical and paramedical team and reminds them of good practices for prescribing and administering medication.
The clinical pharmacist is an integral part of the medical team of the care unit and participates in the department's meetings (multidisciplinary consultation meeting ( RCP ), medical staff, medical-management meeting, etc.).

Lymph node care pathway or lymphoma circuitThe lymph node pathway is a regional care pathway, centralized at the hematology institute of Lower Normandy, at the University Hospital of Caen, whose main objective is to allow a diagnosis and treatment in a rapid time of hematological pathologies of the lymphoma type.
This pathway links hematologists specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of lymphomas with various regional specialists essential to this care pathway.
Lymphomas encompass a group of several dozen pathologies. They are cancers of certain types of white blood cells, located in the lymph nodes, bone marrow, and blood. Other locations are possible.
The main warning sign suggesting lymphoma is the presence of a subcutaneous swelling, a lymph node, larger than 1.5 cm, painless, not red, and gradually increasing in size over several weeks to months. Common locations are the neck, under the armpits, or in the groin.
Other warning signs include an enlarged spleen (splenomegaly) or the presence of deep lymph nodes (lymphadenopathy) on an imaging examination (e.g., a CT scan).
The traditional healthcare pathway involves a consultation with a general practitioner or specialist who then refers the patient within the system.
It is also possible for any patient to contact us directly to make a consultation appointment (number below).
The waiting time before a first consultation is less than 7 days.
The standard diagnostic process, in cases of suspected lymphoma confirmed by a specialist physician, lasts 1 to 2 months and includes:
- A biopsy (surgical or radiological) within 1 to 3 weeks, with results then obtained in about two weeks.
- A PET scan in nuclear medicine.
- A cardiac evaluation by echocardiography or cardiac scintigraphy.
- Placement of a central venous catheter (via radiological or surgical approach)
- A blood test.
If the diagnosis is confirmed, treatment, which usually involves antibodies or chemotherapy products, begins shortly after the diagnosis is established.
All treatments are validated collectively in a multidisciplinary consultation meeting at the Normandy Basic Hematology Institute.

The JACIE Accredited Adult Hematology Service
Since 2008, the transplant unit of the adult hematology department has been committed to a quality improvement initiative called JACIE and obtained accreditation in December 2013 for a period of four years. This accreditation is granted by the European Accreditation Board for Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation Centers following a three-day external audit.
The team analyzed the different stages of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation in adults. They developed and validated operational procedures covering the entire process, from the pre-transplant visit to the transplant procedure itself, including potential complications.
The implementation of this approach is guided by a multidisciplinary steering committee led by Dr. Reman (director of the clinical program) .

The research
Clinical Research Unit
Clinical research is a key activity of the Institute.
The Institute of Hematology is the main player in medical research and innovation in the management of benign and malignant hematological pathologies in Western Normandy.
The institute employs 7 clinical research associates as well as a nurse whose activity is dedicated solely to research.
More than 80 clinical studies are operational each year, allowing us to provide patients in the region with access to innovation and new drugs to treat their disease.
This unit works in close coordination with the Clinical Research Centre of the University Hospital of Caen and is associated with CLIP 2 of the François Baclesse Centre for access to early phase studies.
