The biological hematology laboratory has three missions: to ensure, in the field of hematology, the diagnosis and biological monitoring of patients hospitalized or not at the University Hospital, to provide high-quality training in hematology to all those who wish it, and to develop research programs in hematology.

Activities
They are quantitatively the most important and correspond to the performance of blood cell counts, leukocyte formulas and hemostasis tests necessary for the monitoring of hospitalized patients and those taken care of in the Emergency Reception and Treatment Department.
Cellular hematology
Cellular hematology corresponds to the biological activities required for the diagnosis and biological monitoring of patients with leukemia and cancer:
- Blood counts (hemograms or complete blood counts), platelet counts and leukocyte differentials,
- cytological study of myelograms, adenograms, bone marrow biopsies and puncture fluids,
- Diagnosis of hematological malignancies by cytological study, immunophenotyping by flow cytometry, detection of fusion transcripts by molecular biology, study of chromosomal abnormalities by interphase FISH,
- monitoring of these pathologies,
- study of constitutional abnormalities of the red blood cell.
Hemostasis
Hemostasis refers to the biological activities required for the diagnosis and monitoring of patients with a congenital bleeding disorder (hemophilia, von Willebrand disease) or a thrombotic disorder.
A hemostasis consultation, provided by the laboratory's physicians, allows for on-site blood sampling necessary for specialized testing tailored to the diagnosis and therapeutic recommendations.
- diagnosis, including molecular diagnosis, of thrombophilias
- Phenotypic characterization of von Willebrand disease, including diagnosis of different subtypes and appropriate therapeutic choices
- Diagnosis of heparin-induced thrombocytopenia: performance of different tests,
- molecular diagnosis of hemophilia A with sequencing of the F VIII gene.
All these activities in cellular hematology and hemostasis enable us to provide regional expertise in diagnostic support, advice and standardization of methodologies with collaborations between clinical services and laboratories of general hospitals and private laboratories.
They are part of the LMD reform and are essential for the training of biologists in the Lower Normandy region, and also concern:
- the hematology training of medical and pharmacy students,
- the training of biology interns
- the training of students, BTS or equivalent trainees, DUT.

The research
Cellular hematology
Conducted in parallel with hospital activities, research activities are focused on understanding the mechanisms of leukemias and cancers and on improving patient care.
- The MICAH research group is part of the Faculty of Health at the University of Caen Normandy. It operates under a partnership agreement with INSERM and the University of Rouen Normandy. The MICAH research group is integrated into Team 2, "Genomics and Biomarkers of Lymphoma and Solid Tumors," led by Fabrice Jardin, which is one of the five research teams comprising INSERM Unit U1245 (Cancer and Brain Genomics, CBG), headed by Gaël Nicolas . For many years, it has studied the pathophysiology of hematological malignancies. Its main focus is understanding the cellular dysfunctions that contribute to the development of cancers affecting B lymphocytes and the mechanisms of resistance to treatments. It studies rare diseases such as hairy cell leukemia, primary mediastinal lymphoma, Hodgkin lymphoma, and mantle cell lymphoma.

- Validation of biological tests
- Basic research with an affiliation with the INSERM U1237, PhIND team "Physiopathology and Imaging of Neurological Disorders": evaluation of biomarkers predictive of fibrinolysis success, Willebrand disease type 2B and cerebral pathologies, Tolerance to factor VIII (FVIII) in severe hemophilia A patients.
- Clinical research activities (phase 2, 3 and 4 clinical trials).
