The January challenge (Dry January) 2026

On January 29, 2026 , the Caen University Hospital will host a special event dedicated to Dry January . Located in front of the egg-shaped amphitheater in the South FEH , this stand will be open from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. , offering everyone an opportunity for discussion, discovery, and reflection on alcohol consumption.

The January Challenge: a month to take a break

Dry January, known in France as Défi de janvier (January Challenge ), is a collective, supportive, and non-judgmental initiative. The principle is simple: take a break from alcohol consumption during the month of January , whether for a whole month… or even just a few days. The goal is not performance, but experimentation.

Born in the United Kingdom in 2013, the movement gradually spread internationally before arriving in France in 2020. Today, it is supported by a large collective of associations, hospitals and civil society actors.

A personal and collective approach

Participating in the January Challenge is an opportunity to take stock of one's relationship with alcohol :

  • understand his habits,

  • identify situations that encourage consumption,

  • learning to say no when you don't want to.

Taking on the challenge together—with colleagues, family, or friends—boosts motivation and mutual support. To support participants, the Mydéfi offers personalized tracking throughout the month.

Often quick and lasting benefits

Many people quickly notice positive effects:

  • sleep improvement,

  • renewed energy,

  • better concentration

  • financial savings.

For some, these benefits extend well beyond January, with a lasting reduction in alcohol consumption .

A supportive and non-stigmatizing environment

The January Challenge is for anyone who wants to reflect on their post-holiday habits and collectively consider the role of alcohol in our society.
However, it is not intended for people with alcohol dependence: abruptly stopping can be dangerous. In such cases, support from a healthcare professional is essential.

A stand open to everyone

Whether you've taken up the challenge, hesitated, chosen not to participate, or are discovering Dry January for the first time, this stand is open to everyone .
You will find:

  • a friendly and non-judgmental space for discussion,

  • documentation,

  • facilitators are available to answer your questions

  • Discover drinks and cocktails

An ideal time to learn, discuss and extend the January Challenge experience, in a warm and accessible atmosphere.
