Preventing cervical cancer

Cervical cancer is a malignant tumor that develops from the lining of the cervix. The main risk factor is the prolonged presence of the human papillomavirus ( HPV ) in the cervix. Each year in France, it affects nearly 3,000 women and causes approximately 1,100 deaths.

There are two ways to prevent cervical cancer:

  • Screening tests should be carried out every 3 years for women between 25 and 29 years old, after 2 normal tests carried out one year apart, then every 5 years between 30 and 65 years old;
  • Vaccination against human papillomavirus ( HPV ) is recommended for boys and girls between 11 and 14 years old. It can also be offered as a catch-up vaccination up to and including age 19.

Cervical cancer screening makes it possible to identify 32,000 cancerous or precancerous lesions each year, and to treat them before they develop into cancer.

The management of cervical cancer at the Caen Normandy University Hospital

The Caen Normandy University Hospital has a complete technical platform and a dedicated medical team for the care of patients with cervical cancer.

Treatment of cervical dysplasia:

Dysplasias can develop into cancer after a few years. They must be monitored or treated according to their severity.

In 2022, 182 patients were treated at the facility in the outpatient surgery unit for mild to severe dysplasia and 92% of these patients benefited from conization or laser treatment.

A minimally invasive and innovative surgical procedure:

The hospital has also acquired cutting-edge technology with the support of Rochambelle, the Normandy Region, and the Caen Normandy Health Foundation to surgically treat cervical cancer. The 3D laparoscopic column with fluorescence allows for faster operating times, a shorter recovery period, and greater comfort for the surgeon, which in turn ensures increased safety for the patient.

Supporting research and the fight against cervical cancer

The Caen Normandy Health Foundation of the Caen Normandy University Hospital is waging a determined battle against cervical cancer by investing in research, treatment effectiveness, and cutting-edge equipment. Your support is essential to advancing these vital initiatives. By making a donation, you directly contribute to improving patient care and quality of life.

Every euro counts in supporting medical advances, early detection programs, innovative treatments, and comprehensive support for women affected by this disease. Together, we can make a difference in the fight against cervical cancer and offer a better future to all affected patients. Take action today to support this important cause.
