University Hospital Zero Tobacco

The Caen Normandy University Hospital continues its commitment to the fight against smoking

The Caen Normandy University Hospital is taking action to protect the health of its patients and staff. To provide them with a healthy care and working environment, smoking will be prohibited throughout the hospital grounds starting April 19th.

University Hospital Zero tobacco, breathe!

Awarded Bronze level certification by RESPADD (Network of Healthcare Facilities for the Prevention of Addictions) in January 2020, the Caen Normandy University Hospital actively participates in the fight against smoking. For several years, it has been implementing awareness-raising initiatives (workshops, meetings, information booths) and launching campaigns such as the Tobacco-Free Month and World No Tobacco Day.

In line with this commitment, and as a leading public health healthcare institution, it is now launching a new measure: a Zero Tobacco University Hospital where smoking will be strictly prohibited both inside and outside, except in designated smoking shelters.

The origins of the project

The project was coordinated by a multidisciplinary working group (tobacco specialists, union representatives, security members, management members, occupational physicians, quality management members, smokers, non-smokers, ex-smokers).

The group, established over 20 years ago, aims to develop and expand the overall "Tobacco-Free Hospital" strategy and implement health initiatives within the institution. These initiatives inform and guide patients, staff, and the general public.

Protecting non-smokers and supporting smokers in quitting smoking

This measure applies to everyone: patients, visitors, and staff. Signage will be progressively installed throughout the hospital grounds, and smoking shelters will be set up away from high-traffic areas. An information and poster campaign will also be rolled out within the hospital and on its digital platforms (social media and website).

As always, guidance and support will be offered to patients and smoking staff by the tobacco control coordination unit, in order to support them towards smoking cessation.
