Adapted physical activity as an ally in the management of urological cancers
The expertise and personalized support of patients affected by male cancers at the Caen Normandy University Hospital are at the heart of a multidisciplinary care approach, aimed at improving the quality of life of patients throughout their medical journey.
Supportive care, including Adapted Physical Activity ( APA ) offered within the Maison Sport Santé CHU Caen Normandie , helps to better tolerate treatments and prevent relapses.
Adapted Physical Activity for Therapeutic Purposes
The Sport and Health Center plays a vital role within a comprehensive system for the care of cancer patients. At the University Hospital, this includes the assessment of patients' physical activity, regardless of the phase of their treatment.
This approach aims to determine the level of deconditioning and to propose a personalized (adapted) Physical Activity to the patient's capabilities (taking into account all aspects of their health).
( APA) can be carried out in person at the Maison Sport-Santé ( MSS ) of the University Hospital, via videoconference from the patient's home or near their home, thanks to the network of APA in the region.
The integration of APA , as supportive care for non-pharmacological therapeutic purposes and especially for patients with prostate cancer, has numerous benefits:
- It plays a crucial role in reducing the recurrence rate, with a significant decrease reaching 50 to 60% (according to studies: Duclos in 2009 or Richman et al in 2011 or Kenfield et al in 2011), regardless of the treatment.
- It helps to reduce fatigue by 23% during treatment and by 37% afterward, thus improving the quality of life of patients.
- It is a powerful ally for patients' mental health. It helps reduce anxiety, improves overall well-being, and lowers the risk of depressive syndrome.
This protocol for patients is very widely supported by the League Against Cancer of Calvados.
Regional cooperation exists within the framework of the IMAPAC (Initiating and Maintaining Adapted Physical Activity with Cancer), implemented and managed by OncoNormandie. In parallel, these teams also actively contribute to PARSAC Adapted Physical Activity sessions following treatment.
The Caen Normandy University Hospital and all the facilities involved in cancer care, particularly urological cancers, are working together to offer non-pharmacological care tailored to each patient, especially those with male-related diseases. By combining medical expertise, adapted physical activity ( APA) (as well as other supportive care), and an integrated care network, they are using Movember as an opportunity to raise awareness about the fight against male-related cancers and improve the quality of life for patients in the region.
