When memory fades, isolation can set in.

Isolation affects many elderly people with cognitive impairments. On the occasion of World Alzheimer's Day, Friday, September 26, 2025, Charles Ayme, Laurence Ferreira Da Silva , and Coline Lebruman tell us more.

1. What cognitive disorders can some elderly people suffer from?

Charles Ayme:

Cognitive disorders encompass difficulties affecting memory, attention, language, and orientation. In older adults, these disorders can be linked to neurodegenerative diseases. They significantly impact daily life and often lead to a loss of independence. Understanding these disorders also means better understanding the needs of those affected and their families.

2. Why organize a day of discussions around this question?

Laurence Ferreira Da Silva:

Isolation is a silent suffering. Many elderly people with cognitive impairments feel isolated, sometimes geographically, but also emotionally or socially. Their caregivers can also feel overwhelmed by administrative difficulties or the burden of daily life. This day is an opportunity to break this isolation, to provide information, but also to give strength to those who provide care.

3. What topics will be covered during this afternoon?

Coline Lebruman:

We wanted to address the most frequently raised issues: geographical distance, the complexity of administrative procedures, the emotional impact on those affected, and the sometimes limited social life. The aim is to offer solutions, but also to foster dialogue between professionals, caregivers, and those living with the illness. It's a moment for listening and sharing, on a human scale.
