When memory fades, isolation can set in.

Isolation affects many older people with cognitive impairment. On the occasion of World Alzheimer's Day, Friday, September 26, 2025, Charles Ayme, Laurence Ferreira Da Silva , and Coline Lebruman tell us more.

1. What cognitive disorders may some elderly people suffer from?

Charles Ayme:

Cognitive disorders include difficulties affecting memory, attention, language, and orientation. In older adults, these disorders can be linked to neurodegenerative diseases. They have a significant impact on daily life and often lead to a loss of autonomy. Understanding these disorders also helps us better understand the needs of those affected and their loved ones.

2. Why organize a day of discussions around this issue?

Laurence Ferreira Da Silva:

Isolation is a silent suffering. Many older people with cognitive impairment feel distant, sometimes geographically, but also emotionally or socially. Their caregivers may also feel helpless in the face of administrative difficulties or the burden of daily life. This day is a moment to break this isolation, to inform, but also to give strength to those who support them.

3. What topics will be covered this afternoon?

Coline Lebruman:

We wanted to address the most frequently encountered issues: geographical distance, the complexity of administrative procedures, the emotional experiences of those affected, and the social life that can sometimes be reduced. The idea is to offer avenues, but also to encourage dialogue between professionals, caregivers, and those affected. It's a time for listening and sharing, on a human scale.
