Improving the quality of life of epileptic patients

Motivated by the desire to build a therapeutic education program for patients followed in the neurological functional explorations of Caen Normandy University Hospital, Sophie Fontaine and Laure Gautier, nurses, carried out a work paramedical research.

The impact of educational actions on the quality of life of epilepsy patients

Summary of the study

Epilepsy is a common and debilitating illness for patients and their families. The care of these patients is no longer limited to the simple control of seizures, but considers, in a more global way, their quality of life (QOL). Improving QOL is one of the main goals of therapeutic education. This study aims to evaluate the impact of educational actions on the overall QOL of patients with epilepsy.

Between October 2016 and August 2018, 80 patients aged over 18 years and suffering from epilepsy for at least 6 months and treated at Caen Normandy University Hospital in France were included in the study. They were randomly assigned to the control group with usual care or the experimental group with group educational sessions.

The results show that the overall QOL of patients who participated in educational activities provided by nurses specializing in epilepsy improved significantly. Further research is needed to assess the sustainability of these effects and interactions with caregivers.
