A comprehensive and varied approach

In 2023, it welcomed around forty children from across the former Lower Normandy region. Furthermore, it also participated in the care of 30 children from other departments and regions, within the framework of interregional care pathways.

With 15 beds (including 4 day hospital beds), the service carried out nearly 2,500 stays in 2023, 80% of which were outpatient.

The care pathway for children and adolescents treated at the University Hospital is organized with the OncoNormandie pediatric network , in close collaboration with the pediatric departments of other hospitals in the region and pediatric rehabilitation centers. It involves significant coordination between the various medical (pediatric surgeons, neurosurgeons, pediatric intensivists, radiologists, radiation oncologists, rehabilitation physicians, geneticists, pharmacists, etc.) and paramedical (nurses, nursing assistants, psychologists, social workers, teachers, coordinating nurses, clinical research assistants, etc.) professionals who may be involved during the care pathway or treatments.

The medical and paramedical team is integrated into the Grand Ouest Interregional Childhood Cancer Network, which aims to improve clinical research and training development. As such, it actively participates in research and the use of innovative therapies, and approximately thirty clinical trials are currently underway in the unit. In 2023, 75% of the children treated in the department were enrolled in clinical trial protocols or participated in clinical research, facilitating this population's access to innovative therapies (targeted therapies). Paramedical research is also being developed to improve the quality of patient care.
