Pediatric Reception Unit for Children in Danger
The Child in Danger Pediatric Reception Unit is a pediatric unit focused on minors who are victims of violence or suspected of being so and their health, regardless of their method of entry into the hospital system (medical request or legal request) .
It brings together in the same place professionals from diverse professional backgrounds and complementary skills who participate in an integrated health pathway for children and adolescents at risk.
This health course therefore has the particularity of integrating the medico-judicial course (hearing and medico-legal examination) by relying on the skills of the Legal Medicine Service .

PresentationIn complementarity with the administrative or judicial child protection services of Calvados, UAPED supports hospital teams and all health professionals in the region to answer questions about the situation of minors possibly in danger. The presence of the UAPED within the pediatrics department makes it possible to develop new skills in medicolegal pediatrics complementary to the pediatric, medical, surgical and child psychiatry specialties already practiced .
The presence of the UAPED allows a pooling of certain knowledge already developed on this subject within the Caen University Hospital (forensic medicine, constitutional bone disease, adolescent medicine, child psychiatry, intervention of the hospital legal service, social work, etc. ). This structure allows work on the creation of solid medical files that can be used subsequently, particularly within the framework of the legal procedure, in the interest of the health of children and adolescents in danger and the manifestation of the truth.
ApproachThe UAPED allows an integrated approach, centered on the child by simultaneously evoking in constant care: protection, care and medicolegal constraints.
In practice, in complementarity with the actors already involved in the territory, the UAPED can respond to the requests of all the care services of the Caen University Hospital welcoming minors, of any hospital or extra-hospital health professional, of the institutions , schools, families (…) who wonder about a situation of minors in danger.
This offer is graduated: it can range from simple telephone advice, to the rereading of a written document, a clinical opinion, a consultation or the setting up of hospitalization in a pediatric unit.
Care pathwayWith the practitioners of the units requesting the UAPED, the care pathways for children and adolescents in danger are built in consultation within the establishment.
The resources allocated to the UAPED of the Caen University Hospital were dedicated to the identification and care process of child victims.
The future challenge is to bring together the modalities and stakeholders of the UAPED in a local unit for children and adolescents in danger, and to build fluid operational connections between the actors involved in health and the judicial response in the same place in order to implement a protected approach in a dedicated pediatric place.
