Activities
MissionsMemory Resource and Research Centers are national structures, accredited by the Regional Health Agencies, located within University Hospitals. There are currently 28 CMRRs in France, averaging one per region.
Their missions consist of ensuring, in the field of Alzheimer's disease and related diseases, the coordination and organization of teaching, research and care in consultation with the "Memory Consultations" of the region.
Alzheimer's disease, common among the elderly, affects nearly 1.2 million people in France and 230,000 new cases are recorded each year.
The CMRR of Caen, Lower NormandyAt Caen University Hospital, the structure was created in 2005, but it has relied on a "Memory Consultation" identified and certified since 2002. Its unique feature lies in close collaboration between care and research through the INSERM U1077. Together with the CEP, the CMRR was certified as a CCMR for rare or early-onset dementias in 2024.
Each year, the CMRR welcomes 800 patients, the number of medical consultations exceeds 1400 and approximately 800 neuropsychological consultations are carried out.
The primary mission of the CMRR of Caen is to provide the " Memory Consultation " for the population of Caen and its surrounding area.
In parallel with this activity, the center carries out other actions:
- the regional coordination of the 13 "Memory Consultations" of the public hospitals of Lower Normandy (meetings, medical staff, medical training...) ;
- Memory clinic for public hospitals in Lower Normandy
- the diagnostic tool for certain rare diseases or complex situations;
- university teaching (Masters and University Diploma in neuropsychology) and continuing education for doctors, neuropsychologists, speech therapists;
- the research, within the framework of theunit INSERM* – EPHE* / University of Caen Basse-Normandie U1077 – “Neuropsychology and Imaging of Human Memory”.
The CMRR of Caen relies on a multidisciplinary team composed of 8 hospital practitioners (4 neurologists, 3 geriatricians and 1 psychiatrist), 3 psychologists, 2 speech therapists, 1 social worker.
Memory ClinicIt is open to all adults with memory problems or related disorders that may seem unusual or worrying.
Access is possible directly, but it is preferable that it be at the request of the attending physician or another specialist. Consultations are provided by specialist physicians: neurologists, geriatricians, or psychiatrists. They decide for each patient whether further investigations are necessary: brain imaging, blood tests, etc
Among the additional investigations, neuropsychological or speech therapy tests play an important role. Lasting one to two hours, they are conducted by highly qualified neuropsychologists and speech therapists who can thus determine whether certain intellectual functions (memory, language, writing, visuospatial functions, gestures, etc.) are impaired or preserved.
In collaboration with the specialist physician, they contribute to the diagnosis, monitoring, and organization of each patient's care. Cognitive stimulation sessions may be offered to resident patients at the La Charité Elderly Center of the Caen Normandy University Hospital.
In case of need or problems related to administrative procedures, families can benefit from the advice of a social worker.

Pathologies
Alzheimer's disease and related syndromesAlzheimer's disease is the most common cognitive disorder of degenerative origin. It is characterized by progressive lesions in certain parts of the brain, particularly those involved in memory, but it is not the only one; frontotemporal lobar degeneration and Lewy body dementia are considered related to Alzheimer's disease. Cognitive disorders of vascular origin are also common and can occur alongside degenerative causes.
