The Multiple Sclerosis Resource and Competence Centre , certified in March 2017, provides care for patients with multiple sclerosis and related inflammatory diseases through consultations, day and week hospitalizations and full hospitalizations.
It also handles complex situations, notably through e-staff SEP via videoconference, accessible to neurologists in the region.
Finally, it ensures coordination, training of healthcare professionals and dissemination of good practices in close connection with the NORMANDIE SEP , as well as the promotion of clinical research by participating in numerous epidemiological and therapeutic studies.

Activities
ConsultationsSeveral neurologists specializing in multiple sclerosis provide consultations at the Caen University Hospital (CHU) for undiagnosed patients at the request of their primary care physicians, for follow-up appointments, or for second opinions requested by other neurologists. A nurse from the Normandy MS is also present once a week to introduce the center and, if necessary, schedule a follow-up appointment for further information such as diagnosis updates or treatment plans. She also provides support in complex situations, particularly those involving social issues. Other specialists also contribute to the care of patients at the center, including rehabilitation physicians, ophthalmologists, radiologists, and neuropsychologists.
Hospitalization- Full hospitalization
The General Neurology unit admits inpatients from the emergency department or directly, depending on the reason for admission. These are most often newly diagnosed patients requiring further investigations and urgent treatment (for example, the first MS ). The neurologists at the MS Clinical Research Center (CRC- SEP) are then consulted for their care and the organization of subsequent follow-up.
- Day and Week Hospitalization
The day and week hospital accommodates patients requiring further examinations for the diagnosis of multiple sclerosis and related inflammatory diseases (lumbar puncture, blood tests, MRI, etc. ), as well as providing hospital treatments requiring monitoring in a specialized environment. Admissions are scheduled and follow requests from neurologists, with, if necessary, a further specialist opinion from a neurologist at the CRC- SEP .
Tele-expertiseEach month, a diagnostic and therapeutic consultation meeting is held via videoconference (e-staff) with neurologists from the region to discuss the management of complex cases requiring expertise from the CRC- SEP . A secure telemedicine platform allows for rapid exchange by sharing images and medical data.
Telephone or secure messaging consultations can also be requested from CRC- SEP by other neurologists in cases requiring faster responses.
TrainingThe CRC- SEP also participates in the training of healthcare professionals and patients in partnership with the NORMANDIE SEP SEP also ensures the dissemination of recommendations, diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, and procedures for administering and monitoring new treatments for the disease to neurologists in the region.
ResearchThe CRC- SEP is involved in research, promoting several studies and participating in academic and industry-sponsored clinical trials within the university hospital's clinical research center, which are then disseminated through scientific publications. The national database of the French Multiple Sclerosis Observatory ( OFSEP ) is also updated with each consultation and hospitalization, after obtaining the patient's consent, providing epidemiological data and enabling participation in OFSEP-led research projects. The CRC- SEP also collaborates with the French-Speaking Multiple Sclerosis Society, particularly in drafting the national guidelines published annually on MS . A team of clinical research associates and clinical study technicians dedicated to multiple sclerosis coordinates studies with the center's neurologists.
