Residence for the Elderly · La Charité
53 Boulevard de la Charité, 14000 Caen
The Résidence pour Personnes Âgées (RPA) · La Charité currently has 260 beds divided into long-term care unit ( USLD ) and nursing home ( EHPAD ) . Residents are cared for by 200 staff members.
Côte de Nacre and Clemenceau hospitals , on the southern outskirts of the city. It comprises 9 units spread across 3 pavilions.
The organization of the Residence is the result of a long history, dating back more than 300 years.
- Under Louis XIV, in 1655, the first general hospital in Caen was founded, located on what is now Rue Saint Louis, and remained there until 1823. It was occupied by men, women, children, and sometimes elderly people, all ravaged by poverty, disease, and homelessness. The religious order of the Servants of Jesus took charge of it almost immediately.
- In 1823: the general hospital and the workhouse were solemnly transferred to the Abbaye aux Dames. The general hospital moved to Boulevard Clemenceau in 1908, but the Saint Louis hospice remained at the Abbey until 1972.
- From 1972 to 1984: the Abbaye aux Dames was classified as a historical monument; the hospice was transferred to the former Convent of Charity, on the Falaise road, previously occupied by a religious congregation, where it remains today. It changed its name and became dedicated exclusively to the elderly, thus justifying its name.
- From 1984 to 2005: the “La Charité” residence for the elderly began a series of restorations (pavilion F) and constructions (Monet pavilion, for example) completed in 2005 (Corot and Dufy pavilions).
- April 4, 2005: opening of the Corot and Dufy pavilions, closure of pavilions D and E and of service F1.
- February 2009: Closure of pavilion F2.
- April 2017 : restructuring of the pavilions; grouping of residents in nursing homes on the Corot and Dufy pavilions, in long-term care units on the Monet pavilion.
