Nuclear medicine is a functional imaging technique that involves administering a radiopharmaceutical to the patient and then detecting the emitted radiation. These products are injected, ingested, or inhaled for diagnostic or therapeutic purposes.

The Nuclear Medicine and Theranostics department includes nuclear medicine and PET-SCAN (or PET-CT).

    Activities

    Nuclear medicine

    It uses radioelements in the form of radioactive substances (called radiopharmaceuticals) and allows for the acquisition of functional and/or metabolic scintigraphic images (therapeutic action), reflecting the distribution of radioactivity in the organ being explored, thus translating the functioning of the organs.

    It has 3 gamma cameras, including a CZT camera dedicated to cardiology and 1 PET-CT mainly dedicated to oncology.

    Scintigraphy scans are obtained in two successive stages:

    • the administration to the patient of a radiopharmaceutical that binds to the target organ,
    • the detection of radiation emitted by the radiopharmaceutical using a gamma camera associated with a computer data processing system.

    The activities, mainly performed in adults, are carried out either on a dedicated cardiac CZT camera or on a hybrid SPECT-CT camera:

    • cardiology using a dedicated CZT camera with myocardial tomoscintigraphy and cardiac ventriculography : detection of myocardial ischemia, study of ischemic or arrhythmic heart disease, study of adrenergic function,
    • Pulmonary perfusion and ventilation scintigraphy : detection of pulmonary embolisms, pre-operative functional assessment, shunt detection,
    • bone and joint, thyroid, cerebral, renal, digestive, parathyroid, and adrenal scintigraphy scans
    • as well as the search for infectious foci on prostheses.

    The therapeutic activity, carried out on an outpatient basis, concerns the treatment of certain thyroid pathologies and synoviorthesis.

    The activities mainly concern children (it is practically the only nuclear medicine department in Normandy to perform pediatric scintigraphy) :

    • Nuclear cardiology using myocardial scintigraphy and cardiac ventriculography: detection of myocardial ischemia, study of congenital heart disease,
    • Pulmonary perfusion and ventilation scintigraphy: shunt detection,
    • bone and joint, thyroid, brain, kidney, and digestive scintigraphy scans
    • as well as the search for infectious foci.
    The PET-SCAN

    PET -CT (or PET-CT scanner or PET-CT) also allows for functional imaging (Positron Emission Tomography or PET) combined with anatomical imaging (CT scan). The principle is the same as for nuclear medicine:

    • injection of a radiopharmaceutical (a "positron" emitter that attaches to the target organ(s)),
    • detection of radiation emitted by the radiopharmaceutical using a PET camera to obtain functional imaging,
    • acquisition of anatomical images with the CT scanner,
    • fusion of functional and anatomical imaging.

    The activities mainly concern:

    • oncology, particularly in the context of characterization, staging, therapeutic monitoring and the search for recurrence of certain tumor processes,
    • the detection of inflammatory diseases,
    • Detection of endocarditis on cardiac, vascular or pacemaker/defibrillator prostheses (Multidisciplinary Endocarditis Team),
    • the pre-operative assessment of certain epilepsies refractory to medical treatment,
    • the detection of a functional loss of dopaminergic neuron terminals in the striatum,
    • the detection of myocardial viability in the post-infarction period.
