Opening of the new dental building

The dental service fulfills three missions: a care mission with the diagnostic, preventive and therapeutic management of oral and dental diseases, a training mission for future dental surgeons and a research and innovation mission in connection with the other departments of the establishment.

Located at parking level P3, along Avenue du Pr André Morice, its 1000m² currently houses 4 oral surgery chairs and 17 dental consultation chairs. The practical work rooms of the Faculty of Dentistry will be added to the building; their move to the second floor is scheduled for December. Finally, new chairs will be installed on the ground floor in early 2024, bringing the total number of treatment rooms to 40.

The building was designed as a welcoming, modern, and warm environment for both patients and professionals. The unit receives both long-standing patients and those referred by other departments of the University Hospital. Dental emergencies are not handled here, but a few patients may be seen in cases of serious emergencies (such as trauma or falls) .

Current externs are in training at the University of Rennes, but a partnership between the two institutions allows the Caen University Hospital to be a training site for 6th year students ^from Rennes since 2013. The unit thus receives 10 externs per year, who have the opportunity to develop their skills by taking care of 6 to 8 patients per day and with support from supervising hospital practitioners or freelance practitioners on leave.

In September 2024, the department will welcome around thirty 4th year externs, which will significantly increase the number of patients admitted.

Thus, the working conditions offered by this new building and the links with the new dental department of the university will make it possible to train more dentists within 4 years.
