Find out about gamete donation in Caen

To meet the growing and urgent need for donations, the Biomedicine Agency comes to meet you aboard its traveling bus to recruit new egg donors and new sperm donors.

Caen Normandy University Hospital supports this event organized by the Biomedicine Agency! Come meet the teams from the reproductive medicine department and ask all your questions about gamete donation.

#FaitesDesParents, the tour

#FaitesDesParents, the tour is an event organized by the Biomedicine Agency in 10 cities in mainland France to raise awareness among donors.

On September 18, healthcare professionals from Caen Normandy University Hospital will be present at Place Saint Sauveur in Caen from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. to answer all your questions about egg and sperm donation.

On site, you will have the opportunity to make an initial appointment with the donation center or another donation center closer to you to become a donor.

Increasing the number of gamete donors: a challenge

Although the annual trend in the number of gamete donations has been increasing since 2015, they remain very insufficient to meet the needs of people waiting for a donation within the framework of medically assisted procreation (AMP) .

Indeed, since the law of August 2, 2021 relating to bioethics expanding access to AMP to female couples and unmarried women, the number of requests for support for medically assisted procreation (AMP ) with sperm donation, exploded with nearly 13,000 requests in 2023 compared to around 2,000 per year before 2021.

In addition to the urgent need to increase the quantity of donations, there is also a need to increase the diversity of donor profiles to allow everyone to have a child who looks like them.

Men aged 18 to 44 inclusive and women aged 18 to 37 inclusive, i.e. all potential gamete donors represent 18 million of the French population (source INSEE). However, according to the survey carried out by the Biomedicine Agency in April 2024 [1] , if 80% of people of donating age say they are in favor of this donation, young people seem more reluctant to take the plunge. For 66% of those questioned, better information on the lack of donations and on the donation procedure in general seems to be a lever to encourage donations. Each year, only 1,600 donors take the plunge.

[1] Barometer carried out by the Viavoice Institute for the Biomedicine Agency, by telephone between April 11 and 23, 2024, with a sample of 1,004 people, representative of the French population aged 18 and over.
