  • The job

    The profession of midwifery

    It is a medical profession, defined by the Public Health Code and regulated by a professional order.

    Its area of ​​expertise includes: pregnancy, childbirth and the aftermath of birth, preventive gynecological follow-up, contraception, vaccinations, as well as monitoring of the first 30 days of life of the newborn.

    In 2022, 57% of midwives practiced as employees of a public or private establishment, 25% in a private practice, 10% had a mixed practice and 8% practiced within the framework of the General Council ( Maternal and Child Protection).

    Liberal activity has increased very strongly over the past 10 years.

    Women can see a midwife for:

    • Preparation for childbirth and parenthood
    • Medical monitoring of pregnancy
    • Performing ultrasounds
    • Addiction prevention
    • The practice of childbirth
    • Medical supervision of mother and newborn after birth
    • Post natal consultation
    • Breastfeeding follow-up
    • Vaccination of mother, newborn and those around them
    • Perineo-sphincteric rehabilitation
    • Preventive gynecological follow-up and the prescription of contraception
    • Medical abortion

    The midwives work in a multidisciplinary manner, in particular with the gynecologists-obstetricians to whom the patients are referred when a pathology is detected by the midwife.

    The training reference system is built on the License Master Doctorate process.

    From September 2024, this training framework will be divided into three stages:

    • General education during the first cycle (1st , 2nd and 3rd years )
    • In-depth training during the second cycle (4th and 5th years )
    • Doctoral training during the third cycle (6th year )
    Register

    General education

    • The 1st year in License with Health Access option . are 10 LAS at Caen Normandy University . Registration in LAS is done by Parcoursup . This first year of license allows access to midwifery studies and corresponds to the first two semesters which validate 60 ECTS .
    • The 2 nd and 3 rd years within the School of Midwives correspond to 4 semesters accounting for a total of 120 ECTS .
    • The validation of these 6 semesters results in obtaining the General Training Diploma in Maieutic Sciences which corresponds to a Bachelor's degree.

    • The 4th and 5th years correspond to 4 semesters totaling 120 ECTS .
    • The validation of these 4 semesters results in obtaining the Diploma of Advanced Training in Maieutic Sciences which corresponds to a Master 2 grade.

    Doctoral studies

    • The 6th year corresponds to 2 semesters counting 60 ECTS .
    • During this 6th year , the student must publicly defend a thesis exercise.
    • The validation of these 2 semesters and the exercise thesis results in obtaining the State Diploma of Doctor in Midwifery Sciences.

    Clinical training

    During the 5 university years within the School of Midwives, clinical training is carried out during internships in hospitals, public or private, in private practice, in Maternal and Child Protection Centers, in the Normandy Region and throughout France.

    Discover the school

    Like every year, the school participates in the Studyrama Salon for Higher Studies in Caen which, this year, takes place on October 5, 2024 at the Parc des Expositions from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

    The school also participates in the High School Student Days which will take place on November 19 and 20, 2024 from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the PFRS . The teams offer high school students general information on LAS and a specific presentation of the studies and profession in each sector.

    The school is also present at the Student Fair which takes place on December 6 and 7, 2024 at the Parc des Expositions. A presentation of the profession by midwifery students and teaching midwives is offered.

    On Saturday February 1, 2025 , the PFRS is organizing an Open Day during which each sector welcomes interested students for a specific presentation of studies and the profession, a visit to the University Health Library (Madeleine Brès) and a visit practical work and lesson rooms.

    Finally, on February 28, 2025 , the UFR en santé organizes a Careers Forum within the PFRS during which midwifery students and teaching midwives are present.

  • The competition

    Admission

    If you wish to go for studies in midwifery sciences, these studies are selective and have a limited capacity.

    The number of students admitted to follow the training after passing the tests is established and reviewed each year.

    You can access this training through a License with Health Access option ( LAS ) or through the Gateway device.

    Access by LAS

    1. You choose to enroll in one of the ten Licenses with Health Access option of the University of Caen Normandy. The LAS are the licenses that allow you to apply for health studies (Maieutics, Medicine, Odontology or Pharmacy) . Access to health studies being selective, choose your LAS according to your areas of interest and where you have the best chance of success. Indeed, the first eligibility criterion is to validate your year in the first session.
    2. On Parcoursup , you register for one of these licenses with the health option.
    3. You can apply for entry into health studies at the end of your L1 only if you have followed the health module.
    4. If you are selected, you enter the 2nd year of Maieutics, Medicine, Odontology or Pharmacy.
    5. If you are not selected at the end of the 1st year, you continue your LAS in L2 and you can again present yourself for health studies in L2 or L3.
    6. If you are not applying in L1, you can apply in L2 and L3.

    Access through the Gateway device

    The Passerelle system allows holders of a Master's or Doctorate from another training course and students in a paramedical course to access the 2nd or 3rd year of studies in midwifery, medicine, odontology or pharmacy. A first selection is made on application file then a second selection takes place at the end of an oral test.

    Scholarship fees

    Students admitted after an LAS or through the Passerelle system must pay the university registration fees as well as the Contribution de Vie Étudiante et de Campus (CVEC).
