  • The profession

    The midwifery profession

    This is a medical profession, defined by the Public Health Code and regulated by a professional order.

    Her area of ​​expertise includes: pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum care, preventive gynecological monitoring, contraception, vaccinations, as well as monitoring the first 30 days of a newborn's life.

    In 2022, 57% of midwives worked as employees of a public or private establishment, 25% in a private practice, 10% had a mixed practice and 8% worked within the framework of the General Council (Maternal and Child Protection).

    Liberal professions have increased very sharply over the last 10 years.

    Women can consult a midwife for:

    • Preparation for childbirth and parenthood
    • Medical monitoring of pregnancy
    • Performing ultrasounds
    • Addiction prevention
    • The practice of childbirth
    • Medical monitoring of the mother and newborn after birth
    • Postnatal consultation
    • Breastfeeding monitoring
    • Vaccination of the mother, the newborn and those around them
    • Perineal-sphincter rehabilitation
    • Preventive gynecological monitoring and the prescription of contraception
    • Medical abortion

    Midwives work in a multidisciplinary team, particularly with gynecologists-obstetricians to whom patients are referred when a pathology is detected by the midwife.

    The training framework is built on the Bachelor's, Master's, and Doctorate process.

    Since September 2024, this training framework has been divided into three stages:

    • General education during the first cycle (1st,2ndand 3rdyears )
    • Advanced training during the second cycle (4thand 5thyears )
    • Doctoral training during the third cycle (6thyear )
    Register

    General education

    • The firstyear of the Bachelor's degree with a Health Access option. options at the University of Caen Normandy. Registration for these options is done through Parcoursup. This first year of the Bachelor's degree allows access to midwifery studies and corresponds to the first two semesters, which together award 60 ECTS.
    • The 2ndand 3rdyears at the School of Midwifery correspond to 4 semesters totaling 120 ECTS.
    • The validation of these 6 semesters leads to the awarding of the Diploma of General Training in Midwifery Sciences which corresponds to a Bachelor's degree.

    • The 4thand 5thyears correspond to 4 semesters totaling 120 ECTS.
    • The validation of these 4 semesters leads to the awarding of the Advanced Training Diploma in Midwifery Sciences which corresponds to a Master 2 degree.

    Doctoral training

    • The 6thyear corresponds to 2 semesters totaling 60 ECTS.
    • During this 6thyear , the student must publicly defend a thesis.
    • The validation of these 2 semesters and the thesis of practice leads to the awarding of the State Diploma of Doctor of Midwifery Sciences.

    Clinical training

    During the 5 academic years at the School of Midwifery, clinical training takes place during internships in public or private hospitals, private practices, Maternal and Child Protection centers, in the Normandy region and throughout the French territory.

    Discover the school

    As every year, the school participates in the Studyrama Higher Education Fair in Caen , which this year takes place on October 4, 2025 at the Exhibition Center from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

    The school also participates in the Student Days, which will take place on November 18th and 19th, 2025, from 9:00 AM to 12:30 PM at the PFRS. The teams will offer high school students general information about the LAS (License for Access to Higher Education) and a specific presentation of the studies and career paths within each program.

    The school will also be present at the Student Fair, which takes place on  December 12th and 13th, 2025 at the Exhibition Center. A presentation of the profession by midwifery students and teaching midwives will be offered.

    On Saturday, January 24, 2026, the PFRS is organizing an Open Day during which each program welcomes interested students for a specific presentation of the studies and the profession, a visit to the University Health Library (Madeleine Brès) and a visit to the practical work and lecture rooms.

    Finally, on Friday, February 13, 2026, theFaculty of Health is organizing a Careers Forum within the PFRS ( Regional Training and Research Program) during which midwifery students and teaching midwives will be present.

  • The competition

    Admission

    If you wish to pursue studies in midwifery sciences, these studies are selective and have a limited capacity.

    The number of students admitted to the training program after passing the exams is established and reviewed annually.

    You can access this training through a Licence with Health Access option (LAS) or through the Passerelle scheme.

    Access via Health Access Licenses (LAS)

    1. You choose to enroll in one of the ten Bachelor's degrees with a Health Access option at the University of Caen Normandy. These Bachelor 's degrees allow you to apply to health studies (Midwifery, Medicine, Dentistry, or Pharmacy). Since admission to health studies is selective, choose your Bachelor's degree based on your interests and where you have the best chance of success. Indeed, the primary eligibility criterion is passing your first year in the first session.
    2. On Parcoursup, you register for one of these degrees with the health option.
    3. You can apply for entry into health studies after your first year of undergraduate studies only if you have taken the health module.
    4. If you are accepted, you will enter the 2ndyear of Midwifery, Medicine, Dentistry or Pharmacy.
    5. If you are not selected at the end of the 1st year, you continue your LAS in L2 and you can apply again to health studies in L2 or L3.
    6. If you do not apply for L1, you can apply for L2 and L3.

    Access via the Passerelle scheme (Master's, Doctorate, Medical Assistants)

    The Passerelle program allows individuals holding a Master's or Doctorate degree from another field of study, as well as students in paramedical programs, access the secondor thirdto year of studies in midwifery, medicine, dentistry, or pharmacy. An initial selection is made based on application files, followed by a second selection following an oral examination.

    Tuition fees

    Students admitted after a LAS or through the Passerelle scheme must pay university registration fees as well as the Student and Campus Life Contribution (CVEC).
