Pain Assessment and Treatment Center
The Pain Assessment and Treatment Centre provides care for outpatients suffering from chronic pain.
The CETD also receives hospitalized patients for consultation, advice or evaluation, in order to give an opinion on treatments and to guide their pain management after their discharge.
Activities
Each year, the CETD receives more than 1000 adults and children, and carries out more than 4500 consultations.
The activities of the centre, a specialized structure identified by theRegional Health Agency, fully comply with the new specifications established by the Directorate General for Healthcare Provision in the instruction of May 2014.
The primary mission, for patients in the Caen area and its surrounding region, is to implement a comprehensive and structured assessment, and to propose a personalized therapeutic plan following the assessment.
In all cases, the conclusions of the evaluation are transmitted to the attending physician and possibly to specialist physicians familiar with the patient.
- Specialist consultations : neurology, headaches/migraines, geriatrics, physical medicine and rehabilitation, psychiatry, occupational medicine, neurosurgery, psychology, pain management nursing.

- Individual and group therapies for headaches/migraines
- Individual and group therapies using cognitive-behavioral techniques (lower back pain, diffuse polyalgic syndrome)
- Interviews and therapy sessions with a psychologist
- Practice of sophrology and hypnosis

What is chronic pain?
Pain is defined internationally as "an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with, or resembling, that associated with actual or potential tissue damage".
Chronic pain is defined as pain that affects a patient for more than three months and impacts their quality of life. Most of the time, its origin is multifactorial.
It is therefore what the person who suffers from it says it is, whatever its origin.
Chronic pain – or chronic pain syndrome – is present when the pain exhibits several of the following characteristics:
- persistence or recurrence,
- duration beyond what is usual for the presumed cause (in particular, evolution over more than three months),
- insufficient response to treatment
- significant impact/impairment of functional capacities, relational life, quality of life.
Chronic pain can occur at any age, from early childhood to old age.
The chronic pain treated is linked to a wide variety of conditions. The most frequently encountered are the following:
- Chronic post-surgical pain,
- Complex neuropathic pain,
- Lower back pain, musculoskeletal disorders, osteoarticular pain,
- Diffuse polyalgic syndrome (fibromyalgia)
- Migraines and headaches, facial neuralgia, vascular pain, orofacial pain
- Complex regional pain syndrome,
- Pain resulting from cancer,
- Abdominal, pelvic and perineal pain
