Esquirol Center

CHU Caen Normandy

Opened in 1978, the Esquirol center houses the adult psychiatry service of the hospital-university department of psychiatry of CHU Caen Normandie.

Located on the northern plateau of Caen, near the Côte de Nacre hospital, it takes its name from the famous French psychiatrist Jean-Étienne Esquirol (1777 – 1840) , who was responsible in particular for the adoption of the Law of 30 June 1838 concerning the insane who put an end to their arbitrary internment by simple letter of cachet or court decision.

The center is in charge of a psychiatric sector of 105,000 inhabitants located in the north of the city. A multidisciplinary team (120 people) takes care of patients (from 15 years 3 months) from the sector and outside the sector who suffer from psychological or psychiatric disorders.
