Esquirol Center

Caen Normandy University Hospital

Opened in 1978, the Esquirol center houses the adult psychiatry service of the university hospital department of psychiatry of the Caen Normandy University Hospital.

Located on the northern plateau of Caen, near the Côte de Nacre hospital, it takes its name from the famous French psychiatrist Jean-Étienne Esquirol (1777 – 1840) , who was notably responsible for the adoption of the Law of June 30, 1838 concerning the mentally ill, which put an end to their arbitrary confinement by simple lettre de cachet or court decision.

The center is responsible for a psychiatric sector serving 105,000 inhabitants in the north of the city. A multidisciplinary team (120 people) cares for patients (aged 15 years and 3 months and older) from within and outside the sector who suffer from psychological or psychiatric disorders.
