Our services
The Parasitology-Mycology laboratory is structured into different sectors corresponding to distinct biological activities:
- Conventional Parasitology: Diagnosis of endemic and tropical parasitic infections
- Conventional mycology: direct examinations, cultures and antifungal susceptibility testing.
- Fungal serologies: Aspergillus serologies, Candida serologies, Cryptococcus antigen, BD-glucan.
- Parasite serology: Toxoplasmosis serology (ELISA and chemiluminescence IgG and IgM, ISAGA)
- Molecular biology: Toxoplasmosis PCR , Aspergillus and Mucorales PCR , Pneumocystis PCR , Microsporidia PCR , Leishmania PCR
- Fungal identification activity and participation in aspergillosis surveillance in connection with the Hospital Hygiene laboratory.
The service has ministerial approval for the prenatal diagnosis of toxoplasmosis.
- Biological on-call service 7/7, 24/24 for the diagnosis of malaria, pneumocystosis and neuro-meningeal cryptococcosis.
- Epidemiological surveillance activity and reporting to the CNR such as the CNR for Invasive Mycoses, CNR for Microsporidioses and Cryptosporidioses, CNR for Toxoplasmosis, CNR for Malaria, CNR for Leishmania, CNR for Echinococcosis.
- Mission to train and supervise theses and dissertations for residents of the DES in Medical Biology or other DES outside the field and for students in training (BTS, IUT, L3, M1, M2…).
- Providing consulting services for the interpretation of biological results and diagnostic and therapeutic strategies to clinicians and fellow biologists.

Teaching and research
Biologists participate in teaching medical parasitology and mycology to future medical (medicine, pharmacy, midwifery) and paramedical (IBODE, IDE…) in the region, as well as to science students at the University of Caen (L2, L3, M1, M2).
The team is also involved in various clinical and cross-cutting research projects at the local and national levels through the network of National Reference Centers (NRCs).
For basic research, the biologists are affiliated with the ToxEMAC-ABTE ( ABTE EA 4651), in particular axis 2 "Bioaerosols, Fungal Biodiversity and Health", under the responsibility of Professor David Garon, whose objectives have 2 parts: the first based on the study of bioaerosols and fungal strains collected from air samples and contaminated materials, with an angle focusing on the role of climatic determinants on the growth and toxicity of fungal species and the second focusing on the valorization of fungal biodiversity.
