The job
The practice of the nursing profession involves
- analysis,
- organization,
- the provision of nursing care and its evaluation,
- contributing to the collection of clinical and epidemiological data
- participation in prevention, screening, training and health education actions.
Nurses carry out their activity in conjunction with other professionals in the health sector, the social and medico-social sector and the education sector (public health code, art R.4311-1) .
The profession offers multiple career prospects, both in terms of specialization in nurse anaesthesiology, child care nurses or operating room nurses, and in terms of supervision (health executive, director of care) .
Nurses work in a hospital environment (hospitals, clinics) , in an extra-hospital environment (nurseries, schools and universities, companies, retirement homes) , in a liberal environment (care center, home) , on humanitarian missions .
The field of intervention of nurses is very wide. They are mainly involved in the health sectors, but also in the social and educational sectors, whether in the public, private or liberal sector.
Moreover, since the diploma is recognized throughout the European Union, it allows total freedom of movement.
As of January 1, 2019, the Adéli directory lists 722,600 nurses working in France. It is the leading health profession in terms of numbers, ahead of doctors. The profession is largely feminized: almost nine out of ten nurses are women (87%).

3 years of pedagogical work-study training with…
- A theoretical training (60 weeks at the institute) with lectures, practical work and tutorials. 59 teaching units are divided into 6 areas: human sciences, biological and medical sciences, foundations of nursing methods and techniques, nursing interventions and techniques, integration of knowledge and professional posture, working methods.
- Clinical training (60 weeks internship) : internships are distributed alternately from the first year over periods of 5 to 10 weeks.
Innovative teaching methods...
1. Promoting interprofessionalism and interdisciplinarity is a strong axis of our project.
Several activities are proposed in this direction throughout the training:
- Implementation of the sanitary service
- Mutualization of educational activities with the medical university
- Participation in awareness-raising actions : organ donation days, diabetes days, white plan simulations
- multi-professional simulation activities with the CHU simulation center
- Co-organization of events to raise awareness among groups of users or future professionals (teddy bear hospital with medical and speech therapy students, organization of activities to raise funds to help user associations, participation at high school student forums and days, at cluster open days, etc.)
- Participation in interprofessional conferences (hygiene days, wound and healing conferences, etc.)
- Participation in discussion and/or working groups organized by the ARS , the Regional Council, Health Establishments, the University, etc.
2. Develop your skills through simulation
The IFSI of Caen Normandy University Hospital wished to develop active teaching methods such as simulation by proposing multiple scenarios:
- Simulations by scenarios supporting exchanges and reflections around the care of a patient in a given situation.
- Simulations on basic mannequins (low fidelity) allowing training in professional gestures (sampling, injections on peripheral sites or on implantable chambers, surveys, cardiac massage)
- Standardized patients: these are simulated patients or role plays allowing caregiver-patient interaction. It is a question of developing technical relational skills in scripted situations (welcome interviews, crisis situation management, etc.)
- Simulation on an interactive mannequin: The objective is to put the learners in an evolving situation, to mobilize their knowledge and to acquire skills.
A multiple and quality educational support…
The training is provided by health executive trainers, State Registered Nurses, who have varied professional experience and university titles: University Diplomas, Licenses, Masters.
The permanent trainers work in collaboration with university teachers and professionals in the field. Since 2013, students have benefited from a university digital platform that allows them access to educational content remotely.
A tool to help you succeed...
Each student is followed during the 3 years of study by a referent trainer who accompanies him in the acquisition of his skills.
Formalized times in small groups allow students to share their experiences and work on the areas in which they encounter difficulties. These times are led by the institute's trainers.
A system of supervision of undergraduate students by their undergraduate peers aims, for new students, to support the start of training to promote integration into the institute and better adaptation to the work methods required. Regular assessment activities of this system are organized by the teaching team.
Assessment methods: Individual or collective
Online assessments, online homework submissions, homework on the table, oral presentations of work, simulated situations, analyzes of clinical situations during internships.
An institute integrated into a health training centre…
The IFSI is part of a training center where are grouped:
- Initial training : paramedics, caregivers, medical electroradiology technicians
- Specialty training: anesthetist nurses, operating room nurses, childcare nurses
- Health framework training
- Medical training: medicine, pharmacy, maieutics, speech therapist
The grouping of these training courses on a single site “Pôle des Formations et de Recherche en Santé ( PFRS )” makes it possible to develop shared and innovative educational activities: teaching and multi-professional internships. The premises are accessible to people with disabilities, a disability referent is also available on the Paramedical Training Center (contact details on request from the Institute's secretariat) .
Professional and diversified internship sites…
The students of the institute benefit from numerous internship sites in the departments of the CHU but also in peripheral public or private hospitals, home care structures, mental health establishments and accommodation for dependent elderly people, establishments schools, businesses...
- The IFSI manages the assignments of students on internships. The 3-year course respects the typologies and durations prescribed in the reference system. Internships are established for the semester. For some internships, the student has the possibility of looking for a land by himself
- In the event of a learning difficulty, the course can be adapted according to the student's situation.
An internship allowance and reimbursement of travel expenses are paid in accordance with the decree of July 31, 2009 relating to the State Nursing Diploma.
Certification methods
The state nursing diploma is obtained by obtaining 180 European credits. Students, having validated the first five semesters of training (i.e. 150 credits) and having completed all the tests and internships of semester 6, are authorized to appear before the regional jury for the award of the State Diploma in Nursing .
Continuation of studies, continuing education
After obtaining the DEI, it is possible to access state diplomas in “specialties”: childcare nurse, operating theater nurse, nurse anesthetist (Master 2 grade), health executive (Master 2), or practical nurse advanced (Master 2).
The degree in care sciences facilitates access (bridges) to other medical and paramedical university courses.
Throughout their professional practice, the nurse can have access to targeted training on professional development: public health, quality, pain management, ethics, etc.
