    National characteristics and expectations

    The amended Order of 10 June 2021 relating to the training leading to the State diploma of nursing assistant and containing various provisions relating to the operating procedures of paramedical training institutes has spurred a new fundamental reflection on the strategic issues of training and has represented for our IFAS an opportunity in the same way as the various regulatory changes concerning the organization of health.

    The healthcare assistant training program at the paramedical campus is geared towards several areas:

    • Initial and partial training:
      • Reception, support, and monitoring of each student;
      • Development, implementation and evaluation of the educational project;
      • Organization and management of theoretical teaching and clinical training;
      • Responsibility for the assessment, validation and certification system;
      • Adaptation to the regulatory framework for exemptions from schooling (organisation of personalized supplementary pathways) .
    • Responsibility for the selection tests;
    • Support for research and document management;
    • Promotion of training and professions;
    • Seeking continuous improvement in the quality of training provided and participation in a quality assurance approach;

    In accordance with the law of February 11, 2005 for equal rights and opportunities, participation and citizenship of disabled persons, the principles of non-discrimination and accessibility are applied to training.

    A disability liaison officer is connected to all programs on the paramedical campus of the Caen University Hospital. Students can contact her at: pfp-sec-dir@chu-caen.fr

    Points to be aware of:

    There is no obligation for the student to disclose their disability status to their training institution, whether at the time of the competition or during their studies.

    Cost

    Funding

    Training has an educational cost. It is necessary to plan ahead regarding the financing options for your training and your available resources. Funding for the training year depends on your situation the day before you begin training.
    To be eligible for funding from the Region as a job seeker, proof of registration with France Travail (the French employment agency) must be provided.
    If you completed a diploma or certification program funded by the Region less than 10 months ago (e.g., the ADVF professional qualification), you will not be eligible for funding for your nursing assistant training. This rule does not apply to those continuing their education.

    Regional funding

    Students continuing their education, or those who have left the school system within the last nine months, may be eligible for a grant awarded by the Region. This grant is awarded based on income from two years prior (N-2), either from parents, spouse, or personal resources.
    Applications are submitted after confirmation of enrollment in training on the CROUS Normandy website under the "Paramedical and Social Scholarships" tab (http://www.crous-normandie.fr/).
    For more information, please consult the Normandy Region's " Career Paths " website under the "Training for Healthcare and Social Care Professions" section.

    Quiz

    Innovative teaching methods

    Developing skills through simulation

    Within the framework of the training program, the use of active learning methods, such as simulation in healthcare, is recommended. The nursing assistant program at the paramedical campus of the Caen University Hospital (CHU de Caen) sought to develop this method, which is based on reflection and the ethical principle of "never the first time on a patient " [1] . The aim is to acquire skills, procedures, and knowledge, and to develop cooperation between several professionals (multidisciplinary approach). Mistakes are not penalized but shared and analyzed, thus becoming a catalyst for professional reflection and learning.

    Based on the simulation typology, we propose the following scenarios:

    • Written simulations based on concrete cases or scenarios supporting discussions and reflections on the care of a patient in a given situation;
    • Simulations on basic mannequins (low fidelity) allowing training in professional gestures (ergonomics, gestures and emergency care…);
    • Standardized patients: these are simulated patients or role-playing games allowing for caregiver-patient interaction. The aim is to develop technical relational skills in scripted situations (initial interviews, crisis management, etc.);
    • Simulation with medium-fidelity mannequins: the objective is to put learners in an evolving situation, to mobilize their knowledge and to acquire skills.

    To carry out these sessions, we have 7 practical work rooms equipped with low and medium fidelity mannequins as well as a simulation room allowing recording and live transmission to the debriefing room.

    Training

    A wide range of high-quality educational support

    The training is provided by State-Certified Nurses who possess varied professional experience and university qualifications: University Diplomas, Bachelor's degrees, Master's degrees…

    Permanent instructors work in collaboration with university professors and field professionals. For several years now, students have benefited from a university digital platform that allows them to access educational content remotely.

    A system to help people succeed

    Learner support is based on three intervention methods :

    • Individualized Pedagogical Support (API): 35 hours (within the first three months of training)

    To provide targeted educational support taking into account the diversity of profiles and new methods of accessing training.

    • Individualized educational support for learners: 7 hours (spread throughout the training):

    Educational support is provided both individually and collectively (7 hours per student). It is defined as guidance for the student by a designated member of the teaching team.

    The interviews, which aim to monitor progress, are conducted based on the results of theoretical and clinical assessments; assessments of skills developed during internships; internship reports; and the various projects completed.

    • Guided personal work (TPG): 35 hours (distributed across the different modules):

    Its purpose is to support personal work: preparatory work before input, revision time…

    Evaluation methods

    Validation of the training is based on a system of continuous assessment.

    For each block, an initial assessment test is organized followed by a second session, called a make-up session, for candidates who did not pass the first one.

    Assessment methods: Individual or group

    Online assignment submissions, in-class assignments, oral presentations (in groups or individually) of work, simulated situations, clinical situation analysis assignments.

    School integrated into a health training center…

    The nursing assistant school is part of a training center that includes:

    • Initial training programs : nurse, ambulance driver, nursing assistant, medical radiographer
    • Specialty training programs : operating room nurse, pediatric nurse
    • the training of healthcare managers
    • Medical training : medicine, pharmacy, midwifery, speech therapy

    Bringing these courses together on a single site allows for the development of shared and innovative educational activities: multi-professional teaching and internships.

    The building is accessible to people with disabilities. A disability liaison officer is in contact with all training facilities. Students concerned can contact her through the school office.

    Hospitalization

    Diverse and professionally oriented internship opportunities

    Clinical placements, privileged times for learning professional practice, are of 4 in number ( duration of 5 weeks for the first 3 chosen by the teaching team, and 7 weeks for the last placement called "professional project" ; i.e. 770 hours ).

    For an internship to be validated, the student's actual attendance time must be at least 80%. Over the entire clinical training program, absences cannot exceed 10% of the total internship duration.

    They take place in hospital or outpatient settings, in health, social or medico-social establishments and must be carried out in each of the following structures:

    • Care services for people with physical or mental disabilities;
    • Elderly care services.

    Students have the opportunity to benefit from diverse internship placements at the University Hospital or in other establishments in Calvados:

    • University hospital including medical, surgical, elderly, pediatric, psychiatric and high-tech services;
    • Psychiatric and Mental Health establishments, in hospital settings or in external care facilities;
    • Private establishments;
    • Regional Cancer Control Center (François Baclesse Center);
    • Post-acute and rehabilitation care facilities;
    • Accommodation establishments for dependent elderly people;
    • Home care centers, home support for the elderly and home hospitalization;
    • Others…
    Student

    Certification procedures / graduation

    At the end of the 44 weeks of training, the file is presented to the jury for awarding the state diploma of nursing assistant appointed by the Regional Prefect and organized by the DREETS .

    The diploma (Level 4) is awarded upon successful completion of all skills blocks acquired through theoretical, practical, and professional training. Access to certification is only granted to students who have not accumulated more than five percent of justified, unmade-up absences over the entire training program.
