ActivitiesThe Thoracic Surgery department of CHU Caen Normandie treats patients with:
- Pulmonary pathologies : Surgery for lung cancer, surgery for lung metastases, diagnostic lung biopsies and surgery for lung infections.
- Pleural pathologies : Exploration and treatment of pleural effusions, diagnostic and therapeutic surgery of tumors of the pleura, management of pneumothorax.
- Mediastinal pathologies : Diagnosis and surgery of tumors of the mediastinum: thymomas, schwannomas, cysts, teratomas, lymphomas and hemopathies, etc.
- Parietal pathologies : Surgery of the chest wall, ribs and diaphragm.
- Sympathectomies for Hyperhidrosis and Eurotophobia
- Chest trauma : rib fractures, costal flap, sternum fracture, diaphragmatic ruptures, traumatic hemo-pneumothorax, penetrating wounds, ballistic trauma.
SpeechesThe service performs interventions by conventional (thoracotomy, sternotomy) and also minimally invasive (thoracoscopy and robot-assisted surgery) approaches , for pulmonary, pleural or mediastinal pathologies.
Practitioners work in close collaboration with the pulmonology departments of the region and take part in the Multidisciplinary Consultation Meetings for thoracic oncology at the CHU Caen Normandie and the Center for the Fight Against Cancer François Baclesse . They also regularly participate in RCPs on the management of thymic tumors ( RCP RYTHM IC ) , or in regional referral RCPs ( RCP Sarcoma, RCP endometriosis)
The two practitioners in the department perform nearly 500 operations a year, including more than 200 major lung excisions (segmentectomies, lobectomies, bilobectomies or pneumonectomies) .
