      General data

Nearly one child in 450 develops cancer each year in France, or 2,500 patients under the age of 18 per year. More than 80% of them will recover thanks to specific treatments. These take place in specialized departments such as the pediatric onco-hematology department at Caen University Hospital. We welcome children from the Western Normandy region (Calvados, Manche and Orne) as well as children from other regions (Pays de la Loire, Normandy, Brittany, and beyond) to receive proton therapy (a particular radiotherapy technique existing in only 3 centers in France) .

The Pediatric Onco-haemato-immunology department of Caen University Hospital takes care of children and adolescents, from 0 to 18 years old, for:

      • Cancers and leukemias which are cancers of the blood,
      • Certain benign tumors
      • Bone marrow aplasia,
      • Blood diseases called "benign", non-cancerous, such as abnormalities of the red blood cell (sickle cell anemia, hereditary spherocytosis, autoimmune hemolytic anemia, etc.) , platelets (immunological thrombocytopenic purpura, etc.),
      • (after certain medications, infection, removal of the spleen, etc.) or primary (genetic) immune deficiencies .

The service includes 11 beds, 5 of which are in a so-called “protected” sector and a day hospitalization sector with 4 beds. Patients are referred mainly by their attending physician after direct telephone agreement, but also by local hospitals and pediatric emergencies.

      Care missions

Child and adolescent care is broken down into several levels, from diagnosis to end-of-treatment follow-up:

      • Day-to-day local care : the service works in close collaboration with the region's hospitals and liberals, allowing certain care to be carried out at home or as close as possible to the home.
      • Treatment decisions are discussed at interregional multidisciplinary meetings within the Grand-Ouest Childhood Cancer ( GOCE ) . An active collaboration between pediatric oncologists, surgeons, radiotherapists, radiologists, biologists makes it possible to validate anti-cancer treatments in a collegial manner. The team also takes part in national expert meetings.
      • Access to excellent treatments : the service has been labeled since its creation by the French Society for the Fight against Childhood and Adolescent Cancer and Leukemia , allowing access to research protocols (clinical trials) , new drugs (targeted therapies, immunotherapies, etc.).
      • Thoracic and visceral surgery Caen University Hospital Pediatric Surgery team ( Prof Rod , Head of Department) , also trained in the specifics of pediatric oncology and invested in the SFCE .
      • Radiotherapy is carried out on the site of the François Baclesse Center by a team specialized in pediatric radiotherapy giving access to multiple innovative techniques (tomotherapy, Cyberknife, Protontherapy, etc.) .
      • Numerous support treatments are offered: psychologist, therapeutic education, clinical pharmacy consultation, continued schooling, adapted physical activity, early childhood educator, DRAKAJA system (support for “AJA”: adolescents and young adults, i.e. 15-25 year olds). ), socio-beautician, storyteller, musician, clowns.
      • Long-term follow-up proposed after the end of anti-cancer treatments in order to prevent and detect potential complications of the treatments received and improve quality of life.
      • Monitoring and immunotherapy in autoimmune blood diseases, via the CEREVANCE rare disease competence center.
      • The management of patients with red blood cell pathologies MCGRE rare diseases competence center .
      • Management of patients with primary immunodeficiency , via the CEREDIH rare disease competence center.
      Help for children and families

A parents' association called CADET ROUSSEL (Tel.: 02 33 97 43 85 ) intervenes regularly to help children and their families. It finances numerous actions, including the “croissant café” which allows parents, once a week, to meet with volunteers trained in active listening.

The association also allows the intervention of a storyteller, a musician, a physical activity educator and a socio-aesthetician.

A house of families located 5 minutes walk from the CHU, managed by this association, is available to families, facilitating the stay of those living far from Caen.

Various associations: Cadet Roussel , Les Fées Papillons , etc. offer, in addition, various activities: places for shows at the Zénith or at the Stade Malherbe in Caen (football) , boat trips and meetings of children treated for about ten years and their families on the occasion of the Christmas party, shows in the service, etc.

The hardship of often repeated hospitalizations is mitigated by the intervention of an educator of young children who makes the children play and makes them practice various activities. A teacher is also involved in the service for hospitalized children. It takes over from the usual schooling at school or home schooling set up when school attendance is impossible.

As part of the care sectors, when the family has to move for care (marrow allograft in Rennes or Rouen for example) , a family support system also exists at the national level, in collaboration with social workers SFCE centers via U-Link .

        The research

The medical and paramedical team is integrated into the GOCE , an inter-regional network ensuring quality patient care, but also aiming to promote clinical research as well as the development of training as recommended by the National Cancer Institute .

The medical team actively participates in research and the use of innovative therapies by participating in phase 2 and 3 clinical trials of French, European and international research protocols. Around thirty trials are currently open in the unit. In addition to this active participation in trials, the team has initiated and conducted several clinical studies and thus contributes to the enrichment of scientific knowledge. The department is also involved in preclinical research, through Dr Rouger's membership in the ISTCT unit "Imaging and Therapeutic Strategies for Cancers and Brain Tissues" , UMR6030, in the OncoCARE group whose research is dedicated to the fight against against cancer.

Paramedical research is also developed to improve the quality of patient care.
