What is endometriosis?

Endometriosis is a common and complex gynecological condition. It is due to the location of the endometrium outside the uterine cavity. This situation is very often responsible for severe pelvic pain, especially during the period of menstruation, painful sexual intercourse and is also often associated with digestive or urinary disorders and subfertility. It is estimated that 5 to 10% of women of childbearing age and nearly 40% of infertile women have it.

Management of endometriosis at CHU Caen Normandie

The CHU de Caen Normandie is a regional referral center for endometriosis. It has several missions, including:

  • Train practitioners or future practitioners in the care of patients with endometriosis;
  • Coordinate and participate in research work on endometriosis;
  • Engage in a dynamic of regional coordination through the EndoReNo association with establishments taking charge of endometriosis.

The records of patients with complex endometriosis or requiring treatment by several teams are discussed within Multidisciplinary Consultation Meetings ( RCP ). These RCPs bring together gynecologists, radiologists, fertility doctors, digestive surgeons, urological surgeons, thoracic surgeons, pain doctors, etc. They are organized every month within the CHU Caen Normandie. There is also a RCP , bringing together practitioners from the public and private sectors of former Lower and Upper Normandy, to discuss the most complex cases.

The CHU Caen Normandie takes care of 400 patients per year, including around 200 complex cases in multidisciplinary collaboration.

A revolutionary test to detect endometriosis

The CHU Caen Normandie participated in the external validation of the Ziwig Endotest® test, the first diagnostic saliva test for endometriosis.

This in vitro diagnostic medical device is reserved exclusively for healthcare professionals for the diagnosis of endometriosis from a saliva sample. It is already available in several European countries but also in Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

Ziwig hopes to see it available in France by the end of 2023: https://ziwig.com/endotest/

Endometriosis – Practical information

Several practitioners are trained in the department to support patients with this disease and offer them comprehensive care and a coordinated care pathway – from diagnosis to medical and surgical treatment and infertility management. The endometriosis consultation takes place at the woman-child center of the CHU

Prevent cervical cancer

Cervical cancer is a malignant tumor developed from the lining of the cervix. The main risk factor is the prolonged presence of the papillomavirus ( HPV ) in the cervix. Each year in France, it affects nearly 3,000 women and causes approximately 1,100 deaths.

There are two ways to prevent cervical cancer:

  • The performance of a screening test every 3 years for women between 25 and 29 years old, after 2 normal tests carried out one year apart, then every 5 years between 30 and 65 years old;
  • Vaccination against human papillomavirus ( HPV ) for boys and girls between 11 and 14 years old. It can also be offered as a catch-up up to the age of 19 inclusive.

Screening for cancer of the cervix makes it possible to identify 32,000 cancerous or precancerous lesions each year and treat them before they develop into cancer.

The smear, associated with the HPV , remains the essential examination for screening for lesions of the cervix. In 2022, the gynecology-obstetrics medical team at the CHU Caen Normandie carried out nearly 1,800 smears, as part of the screening for pathologies of the cervix and the gynecological follow-up of women.
