The CHU Caen Normandie continues its commitment to the fight against smoking

The CHU Caen Normandie is mobilizing for the health of its patients and staff. In order to offer them a healthy care and work environment, from April 19, smoking will be prohibited throughout the hospital park.

CHU Zero tobacco, breathe!

Certified Bronze level by the RESPADD (Network of Health Establishments for the Prevention of ADDictions) in January 2020, the CHU Caen Normandie actively participates in the fight against smoking. For several years, it has been setting up awareness-raising actions ( workshops, meetings, stands) and initiating campaigns such as the Month Without Tobacco or World No Tobacco Day.

In the continuity of this commitment, and as a reference care establishment in public health, it is now initiating a new measure: a Zero Tobacco University Hospital where smoking will be strictly prohibited inside and outside outside smoking shelters.

The origins of the project

The project was coordinated by a multidisciplinary working group (smoking doctors, trade union representatives, members of safety, members of management, occupational physicians, members of quality management, smokers, non-smokers, ex-smokers).

The group, created more than 20 years ago, aims to develop and deepen the overall "Tobacco-free hospital" strategy and to implement health actions within the establishment. These actions inform and guide patients, staff and the general public.

Protecting non-smokers and supporting smokers in quitting smoking

This measure concerns everyone: patients, visitors and professionals. Signage will be gradually put in place throughout the hospital park and smoking shelters will be installed outside the places of passage. An information and poster campaign will also be deployed within the establishment and on its digital media (social networks and website).

As always, guidance and support will be offered to patients and smoking agents by the tobacco coordination unit, in order to support them towards smoking cessation.
