Innovative teaching methods
The IFMEM of CHU Caen Normandie wanted to develop active teaching methods such as simulation by proposing multiple scenarios:
- Simulations by scenarios supports exchanges and reflections around the care of a patient in a given situation.
- Simulations on basic mannequins (low fidelity) allowing training in professional gestures (sampling, injections on peripheral sites or on implantable chambers, surveys, cardiac massage)
- Standardized patients: these are simulated patients or role plays allowing caregiver-patient interaction. It is a question of developing technical relational skills in scripted situations (reception interviews, management of a crisis situation, etc.) . These simulations are carried out either in the practical work room at the PFRS or in the examination rooms of the CHU and the François Baclesse Center in order to be able to immerse the students in the real conditions of an examination room.
- Simulation on an interactive mannequin: The objective is to put the learners in an evolving situation, to mobilize their knowledge and to acquire skills. The partnership with the simulation laboratory of the CHU allows students to practice in simulation of real care.
A multiple and quality educational support…
The training is provided by health executive trainers, State-certified Medical Electroradiology Manipulators, who have varied professional experience and university titles: University Diplomas, Licenses, Masters.
The permanent trainers work in collaboration with university teachers and professionals in the field. Since 2013, students have benefited from a university digital platform that allows them access to educational content remotely.
A tool for success
Each student is followed during the 3 years of study by a referent trainer who accompanies him in the acquisition of his skills.
Formalized times in small groups allow students to share their experiences and work on areas in which they encounter difficulties. IFMEM trainers .
A system of supervision of undergraduate students by their undergraduate peers aims, for new students, to provide support at the start of training, promoting integration into the institute and better adaptation to the required working methods. Regular assessment activities of this system are organized by the teaching team.
Assessment methods: Individual or collective
Online assessments, online homework submissions, homework on the table, oral presentations of work, simulated situations.
Institute integrated into a health training center…
IFMEM is part of a training center which includes:
- Initial training : paramedics, caregivers, nurses;
- Specialty training: nurse anesthetists, operating room nurses, childcare nurses;
- Health executive training;
- Medical training: medicine, pharmacy, midwifery, speech therapist.
The grouping of these training courses on a single site “Pôle des Formations et de Recherche en Santé ( PFRS )” makes it possible to develop shared and innovative educational activities: multi-professional teaching and internships.
The IFMEM has training rooms equipped with the computer equipment necessary for the implementation of training activities using teaching methods requiring the contribution of new technologies.
Students have Wifi access terminals, and the equipment necessary for carrying out educational activities and access to the entire network of libraries at the University of Caen Normandy.
Access to the Collégium platform of Normandy Caen University facilitates the posting of content online, access to a forum dedicated to training and the carrying out of online collaborative activities.
The lessons are organized in the same place at the PFRS . The building is accessible to people with disabilities, a disability representative is also available at the paramedical training center (contact details available on request from the institute secretariat).
Professional and diversified internship sites…
The students of the institute benefit from numerous internship sites in the departments of the CHU but also in peripheral public or private hospitals, clinics and polyclinics, centers for the fight against cancer and private imaging centers.
IFMEM manages the assignments of internship students. Internship courses are offered according to resources and the obligations of distributing internship locations over the 6 semesters. They can be regularly adapted based on the assessments of educational monitoring advisors and the specific objectives formulated by the students.
An internship allowance and reimbursement of travel expenses are paid in accordance with the decree of December 16, 2020 relating to internship allowances paid to students enrolled in training institutes.
Certification methods
MEM State diploma is obtained by obtaining 180 European credits. Students, having validated the first five semesters of training (i.e. 150 credits) and having completed all the tests and internships of semester 6, are authorized to appear before the regional jury for the awarding of the MEM State Diploma .
