    The interested parties hold a category B driving license and have a certificate issued by the prefect, after a medical examination carried out under the conditions defined in articles R.221-10 and R. 221-11 of the Highway Code.

    Definition of the job

    The ambulance driver is a health and medical transport

    Within the chain of care or health, the paramedic ensures the care and/or transport of patients at any age of life on medical prescription, or within the framework of urgent medical aid, by means of medical transport vehicles equipped and adapted to the patient's situation and state of health. As such, he can provide emergency care in his field of intervention.

    It may also carry out activities relating to the transport of labile blood products, organs, or the transport of transplant teams.

    In the event of a declared state of health emergency or in the context of the triggering of health plans, the paramedic may be required to carry out acts of care in his area of ​​expertise.

    He carries out his activity within medical transport companies, care establishments (hospital, clinic, etc.) , specialized emergency services, in collaboration with a multi-professional team (doctors, nurses, physiotherapists or any other healthcare professional, etc.) .

    Types of employment and career paths

    The Diplôme d'Etat d'Ambulancier allows you to practice in public hospitals and mainly in private companies. The DEA also provides access to a FAE SMUR  (Employment Adaptation Training) , compulsory training for working in SMUR .

    After several years of experience, the paramedic can also progress to a post of regulator in a medical transport company. He is then in charge of receiving calls and setting up the intervention schedule.

    For DE paramedics who wish to reorient themselves, there are gateways to access nursing assistant and childcare assistant training. The DEA allows certain teaching exemptions.

    Art. 2The ambulance attendant is authorized to drive the light medical vehicle and the ambulance. He can also be the paramedic's teammate in the ambulance.

    The professional holding the position of paramedic must have:

    • A driving license outside the probationary period in accordance with the regulations in force and in a valid state;
    • The prefectural certificate of fitness to drive an ambulance after a medical examination carried out under the conditions defined in article R.221-10 of the highway code;
    • A medical certificate of no contraindications to the profession of ambulance driver issued by an approved doctor (absence of musculoskeletal or psychological problems, of a disability incompatible with the profession: visual or auditory handicap, amputation of a limb, etc.) ;
    • A medical certificate of vaccinations in accordance with article L.3111-4 of the public health code;
    • A 70-hour training certificate
    • Level 2 Emergency Gesture and Care Training Certificate.

    The IFA is attached to the CHU Caen Normandie which has care, research and teaching missions. It is subject to a double supervision:

    • the Ministry of Health, through the DREETS (Regional Directorate for the Economy, Employment, Labor and Solidarity) and the ARS (Regional Health Agency) ,
    • the Regional Council (since July 2005) .

    Since April 2015, the components of the paramedical training center have integrated the Health Training and Research Center. The classrooms are shared with all the training courses present at the PFRS . Students have access to tutorial rooms, one of which is equipped with a high-fidelity simulation dummy.

    Training and disability

    With regard to the law of February 11, 2005 for equal rights and opportunities, participation and citizenship of people with disabilities, the principles of non-discrimination and accessibility are applied to training.

    A disability representative is in contact with all the paramedical training structures at the CAEN University Hospital. The students concerned can contact her via the tuition secretariat of their training

    Vigilant point: 

    There is no obligation for the student to communicate their disability situation to their training structure, either at the time of the competitive exam or during their studies.

    Training objectives

    The State Ambulance Diploma certifies the skills required to practice the profession of ambulance driver: decree of April 11, 2022 relating to the training leading to the State Ambulance diploma and the training conditions of the paramedic auxiliary, appendix II

    1. Establish appropriate communication to inform and support the patient and his entourage
    2. Accompany the patient in his installation and his movements by mobilizing his resources and using the appropriate equipment
    3. Implement hygiene and comfort care adapted to the patient's needs and situation
    4. Assess the clinical state of the patient in his area of ​​​​expertise
    5. Implement the care adapted to the patient's condition, in particular those relating to emergencies
    6. Carry out the preparation, control and maintenance of the vehicle adapted to land medical transport in order to guarantee transport safety
    7. Drive the vehicle suitable for land medical transport in compliance with traffic and road safety rules and in a manner appropriate to the patient's state of health
    8. Use appropriate maintenance techniques for equipment and facilities, within their area of ​​expertise, taking into account the prevention of associated risks
    9. Identify, report, process anomalies and malfunctions related to the maintenance of the vehicle, equipment and installations and ensure their traceability
    10. Research, process, transmit relevant information to ensure the continuity and traceability of care and activities and transmit professional know-how
    11. Organize and control its activity, cooperate within a multi-professional team and improve its practice as part of a quality / risk management approach

    The duration and organization of the training

    The training leading to the Diplôme d'Etat d'Ambulancier is a total duration of 22 weeks and 4 days of teaching in an institute and teaching in clinical internship and in business, as well as 3 hours of educational follow-up (801 hours) distributed as follows:

    • 15 weeks, 4 days and 3 hours  (556 hours) of theoretical, practical teaching and follow-up in an institute
    • 7 weeks (245 hours) of teaching in clinical internship and in business spread over 3 internships

    Skill block 1

    Care of the patient at any age of life as part of its missions

    Training module :

    • Module 1 : relationship and communication with patients and their families (2 weeks)
    • Module 2: patient support in setting up and moving around (2 weeks)
    • Module 3 : implementation of adapted hygiene and comfort care and readjustment (1 week)

    Assessment methods : Assessment including a simulated practice targeting an elderly or disabled patient or wearing medical equipment, Assessment of internship skills


    Skill block 2

    Realization of a collection of clinical data and implementation of care adapted to the patient's condition, in particular those relating to emergencies

    Training module :

    • Module 4 : assessment of the clinical state of the patient (3 weeks)
    • Module 5: implementation of care adapted to the patient's condition, in particular those relating to emergencies (3 weeks) including FGSU (Training in Gestures and Emergency Care)

    Assessment methods : GSU level 2 training certificate, Assessment including simulated practice (allowing validation of the GSU2 training), Skills assessment during the internship


    Skill block 3

    Transport of the patient in compliance with traffic and road safety rules

    Training module :

    • Module 6: preparation, control and maintenance of the vehicle suitable for land transport (1 day)
    • Module 7: driving the vehicle adapted to land medical transport in compliance with the rules and road safety in a manner adapted to the patient's state of health (3 days)

    Skill Block 4

    Maintenance of the equipment and installations of the vehicle adapted to land medical transport, taking into account the intervention situations

    Training module :

    • Module 8: maintenance of equipment and installations of the vehicle adapted to land medical transport and risk prevention (1 week)

    Assessment methods : Situation study identified during the internship / Situation study that may include simulated practice, Evaluation of internship skills


    Skill block 5

    Teamwork and processing of information related to transport activities, quality / risk management

    Training module :

    • Module 9: information processing (1 week)
    • Module 10 : multi-professional teamwork, quality and risk management (2 weeks)

    Assessment methods : Situation study that may include simulated practice, Internship skills assessment


    During the course, 2 weeks of vacation are planned.

    Internships

    3 internship periods allowing the validation of skills in the following places chosen by the institute:

    • Adult / Child emergency medicine course (Emergency department / SAMU – SMUR): 2 weeks
    • Company Medical transport: 2 weeks
    • Short and long-term care structures, follow-up care and rehabilitation, EHPAD , child and adult, psychiatry and mental health according to the IFA educational project: 3 weeks
    • During his training in a professional environment, the student carries out at least one night work experience and one weekend work experience.

    These courses are organized by the teaching teams in collaboration with the heads of the host structures, according to 5 criteria :

    • the training program,
    • the number of internships,
    • the educational project,
    • the student's professional project,
    • the student's experience.

    Subject to being admitted to follow the training under the conditions set by this decree, equivalences of skills, blocks of skills or partial or complete relief of certain training modules are granted to students holding the following titles or diplomas:

    1. The State diploma of Caregiver (DEAS);
    2. The State Diploma of Auxiliary Childcare (DEAP);
    3. The Diploma of Medical Regulation Assistant (DARM);
    4. The State Diploma of Educational and Social Support (DEAES);
    5. The professional title of Family Life Assistant (AVF);
    6. The professional title of Medico-Social Service Agent (ASMS);
    7. The professional title of Delivery Driver on Light Sanitary Vehicle (CLV on VSL);
    8. The certificate of professional qualification of Medical Assistant (AM);
    9. The professional baccalaureate in Accompaniment, Care and Services to the Person (BAC ASSP);
    10. The professional baccalaureate in Services to People and Territories (BAC SAPAT);
    11. The professional baccalaureate driver road transport of goods (BAC TRM)
    12. Persons holding one of the diplomas allowing the exercise of the professions of nurse, masseur-physiotherapist, podiatrist-podiatrist, occupational therapist, psychomotor therapist, medical electroradiology manipulator and medical laboratory technician

    Training funding

    Training can be financed by regional and local partners such as the Regional Council, Skills Operators ( OPCO ) for employees, Pro transitions for employees other than auxiliary ambulance employees, etc.

    The cost for 2023-2024 is 3200 euros.

    The Normandy Region has decided to grant job seekers the remuneration of vocational training interns from the start of the school year in September 2022 . This remuneration is calculated from the hours of actual presence, up to €685 per month for a training course of 35 hours per week.

    The criteria for receiving this remuneration are (cumulative criteria):

    • Be registered and diligently follow AS, AES or Ambulance training provided in a Norman institute;
    • Be a job seeker not compensated by Pôle emploi (registered or not with Pôle-emploi);
    • Be out of the school system for more than 9 months;
    • Benefit from funding for the educational cost of training by the Region .

    Obtaining the State Diploma of Ambulance

    The State Ambulance Diploma is obtained by validating all the blocks of skills acquired in theoretical and practical training and in the workplace, according to the evaluation criteria defined in the reference system.

    Are declared received with the State diploma of ambulance, the pupils, holders of the Certificate of Training in the Gestures and Emergency care of level 2 ( AFGSU 2) having validated all the skills required to obtain the certification.

    The jury for the state ambulance technician diploma is appointed by the regional prefect, on the proposal of the regional director for the economy, employment, labor and solidarity ( DREETS ) or his representative. It is chaired by the latter or his representative and includes:

    • The Director General of the ARS or his representative
    • A Director of an IFA
    • A permanent trainer from an IFA
    • A paramedical or medical scientific adviser, an emergency professional from an IFA
    • A practicing medical transport company manager, holder of a state ambulance technician diploma or his representative who also holds this diploma
    • A state-certified paramedic employed by a medical transport company or working in a health establishment.

    Premises and equipment

    All courses are organized at the PFRS (Pôle des Formations et de Recherche en Santé).

    The building is accessible to people with disabilities. A disability referent is present at the paramedical training center (contact details available on request from the school secretariat) .

    Funding

    Educational cost 2023-2024: €7,500

    For partial courses, the price is calculated in proportion to the number of weeks of training.

    The training is eligible for the CPF.

    • -You are an employee on a permanent contract before starting training: the training must be covered by your employer or by a funding organization (Transitions Pro, OPCO , etc.).

  • The selection – Admission results on June 14, 2024

    Methods of selection at the IFA of CHU Caen Normandie

    In accordance with the decree of April 11, 2022 relating to the training leading to the state ambulance technician diploma and the training conditions of the paramedic auxiliary:

    The selection process includes eligibility on file and an admissions interview.

    Prerequisites for applying for the selection :

    The candidate in practice for at least one month, continuously or intermittently, as an ambulance auxiliary or as an ambulance driver in the last three years, must provide the employer's certificate, and is exempt from the 70-hour internship.

    Details on the selection methods:

    • All candidates have a 70-hour internship to complete, except those who have worked as an ambulance auxiliary for at least 1 month in the last 3 years.
    • All candidates holding a title or diploma giving entitlement to a partial course will have to pass an interview, except ambulance auxiliaries who have exercised this function for a continuous period of at least 1 year during the last 3 years.
    • Candidates exempted from admissibility , holders of one of the titles or diplomas mentioned in the information notice, do not have to write the handwritten document of 2 pages maximum.

    The results will be displayed in the lobby of the PFRS and all applicants will receive a letter.

    The results will also be published on the internet, but only the receipt of a written confirmation of the results has legal value.

    PLEASE NOTE : Candidates admitted, including those exempted from selection, have 10 days after the date of posting of the results to return the reply coupon and confirm their wish to enter training.

    If, within ten days of the posting of the results, the candidate has not sent his reply coupon, he is presumed to have waived his admission. His place will be offered to another candidate on the complementary list.

    The results of the selection process are only valid for the academic year for which this selection was organised.

    However, the director of the institute may grant, for a period he determines and within the cumulative limit of two years, a postponement for entry into school at the training institute :

    • Either by right in the event of maternity leave, rejection of the benefit of professional or social promotion, rejection of a request for training leave, rejection of a request for layoff, postponement of a alternation or for the care of a child under 4 years old.
    • Or exceptionally, on the basis of the elements provided by the candidate justifying the occurrence of an important event preventing him from starting his training.
    Any candidate who has benefited from a postponement of admission must, at least three months before the planned start date, confirm their intention to resume their studies on the said start.
