National characteristics and expectations
Since the decree of April 11, 2022 relating to training leading to the state ambulance diploma and the training conditions for ambulance auxiliaries, in-depth reflection has been initiated on the strategic issues of training and these developments have represented for our IFA an opportunity in the same way as the various regulatory changes concerning the organization of health.
The educational project formalizes our commitment by specifying the purposes and means of this training: it lays the foundations and directions of healthcare training, sets out the values and concepts, specifies the resulting tools.
The acquisition of skills and the ability of students to adapt to developments while respecting an ethical framework motivate our action.

Innovative teaching methods
Develop your skills through simulation
As part of the training framework, the use of active teaching methods, such as health simulation, is recommended. The IFA of Caen University Hospital wanted to develop this method based on reflexivity and the ethical principle “never the first time on a patient ” [1] . This involves acquiring skills, procedures, knowledge or developing cooperation between several actors (multi-professionality). The error is not punished but shared and analyzed, thus becoming a lever for professional reflection and learning.
Based on the simulation typology we propose the following scenarios:
- Written simulations based on concrete cases or scenarios supporting discussions and reflections around the care of a patient in a given situation;
- Simulations on basic mannequins (low fidelity) allowing training in professional gestures (ergonomics, gestures and emergency care, etc.);
- Standardized patients: these are simulated patients or role-playing games allowing caregiver-patient interaction. This involves developing technical relational skills in scripted situations (welcome interviews, crisis situation management, etc.);
- Simulation with medium fidelity mannequin: the objective is to put learners in a progressive situation, to mobilize their knowledge and to acquire skills.
To carry out these sessions, we have 7 practical work rooms equipped with low and medium fidelity mannequins as well as a simulation room allowing recording and live broadcast in the debriefing room.

Multiple, quality educational support
The training is provided by trainers, State Qualified Nurses, who have varied professional experience and university qualifications: University Diplomas, Licenses, Masters, etc.
Permanent trainers work in collaboration with university teachers and field professionals. For several years, students have benefited from a university digital platform which allows them access to educational content remotely.
A tool for success
Supporting the student in the construction and completion of their professional project is the common thread guiding all the actions of the institute's teaching team. A system to support success, contractual and scalable, has been put in place for several years. It is detailed below
This system begins before starting training. Indeed, thoughtful orientation signals successful integration into training. Thus, the teaching team is involved in all communication actions (open days, careers forum, high school student day, careers fair). Providing information about the targeted profession and possible directions and reorientations is a guarantee of future success.
Then, support to help learners succeed is provided according to 2 intervention methods :
- Support for professionalization;
- Individualized educational monitoring of learners.
Support for success:
The trainer will support students on the path to success and professionalization. It will ensure a pedagogy focused on success which requires:
- To establish a climate conducive to learning by taking into account the physical environment, the human and interpersonal environment;
- To give confidence to the student whatever their initial level and background;
- To determine learning needs taking into account the student's personal motivations, expectations, personality, abilities and difficulties;
- To favor methods allowing students to use and optimize their experiences;
- To get the student to think and question themselves;
- To promote reflexivity;
- To support the student in a learning process and in the development of their professional project
Individualized educational monitoring of learners:
Educational monitoring is approached individually and collectively (3 hours 30 minutes per student).
It is defined as support for the student, by a representative from the teaching team.
The interviews, which aim to monitor progress, are conducted based on:
- Results of theoretical and clinical evaluations;
- Assessments of skills developed during internships;
- Internship reports;
- Various works carried out.
Evaluation methods
The validation of the training is based on a continuous evaluation system.
For each of the blocks, a first assessment test is organized followed by a second session, called a catch-up session, for candidates who did not pass the first.
Assessment methods: Individual or collective, online homework submissions, table assignments, oral presentations (in groups or individually) of work, simulated situations, analysis of clinical situations.
