Malnutrition
The Caen Normandy University Hospital is mobilizing
From November 17 to 23, 2025, the National Malnutrition Awareness Week raises awareness of a public health issue that is often overlooked: malnutrition, which affects nearly 2 million people in France.
3 questions to find out more
What is malnutrition? What are the consequences? What are the warning signs?
Malnutrition occurs when food intake is no longer sufficient to meet the body's needs . It causes a loss of weight, muscle mass and strength, increasing the risk of falls, infection and loss of independence.
Warning signs: weight loss, lack of appetite, unusual fatigue or clothes that are too loose.
Why establish a National Malnutrition Awareness Week?
A national and local mobilization is needed because this silent disease is still far too common!
Coordinated by the Collective for the Fight Against Malnutrition (CLCD), commissioned by the Ministry of Solidarity and Health, within the framework of the National Nutrition and Health Program ( PNNS ), this week aims to inform, prevent, screen and encourage the management of malnutrition.
In Normandy, the Caen Normandy University Hospital will once again be a partner of the SND 2025.
What initiatives has the Caen Normandy University Hospital undertaken?
The Clinical Nutrition Cross-Functional Unit ( UTNC ) and the Catering Department are fully involved through several actions throughout the week:
- Poster campaign in the halls to raise awareness among patients, visitors and professionals, with the provision of the PARA-D tool, developed by Professor Agathe Raynaud-Simon, intended for self-screening on the risk of malnutrition in 4 questions: Weight / Appetite / Meals / Diet.
- A Nutri'Truck , a "mobile bar" run by a multidisciplinary team (dietitians, caregivers, catering professionals), will travel to several care units to offer samples of oral nutritional supplements (ONS) and homemade fortified preparations, prepared by the CHU's cooks, to patients, families and professionals.
- Quiz on malnutrition for university hospital professionals with a competition to win prizes.
- Open kitchens operation for CHU professionals who will be able to come and discover the CHU Kitchen, i.e. the Central Production Unit (UCP) of Colombelles which distributes nearly 6000 meals to patients and staff of the establishment, on the Normandial site.
Informing to better prevent
These local actions complement the national initiatives relayed by the CLCD and social networks.
The goal is to raise awareness of the signs of malnutrition and encourage everyone to take action.
